Announcing the Metafilter Short Fiction Anthology!

Announcing the Metafilter Short Fiction Anthology! Previously suggested by Effigy2000, the Metafilter Short Fiction Anthology is a chance for all us writer-type or vaguely-writer-type Mefites to get together and write write write! We'll be taking a "Thieves' World" approach to our writing with each story in the Anthology taking place in a setting first posited by Mefi's Own L. Fitzgerald Sjoberg and then fleshed out by himself and members of the Mefi community. All who are interested are encouraged to join in!

Patton Oswalt Eats At KFC

Comedian Patton Oswalt has gotten a lot of mileage out of KFC's Famous Bowls ("a failure pile in a sadness bowl."); after years of mockery, he finally tries one for himself, and writes about the experience.

Wot's...Uh The Deal?

Pink Floyd fans may not need no education but Gilmourish, an exhaustive review of the guitars and audio effects of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour (with help from an insider), will leave most comfortably numb.

Room at the End of the Hall

I had this vague melody a year or so ago, and at the time it was starting to become a song about riding my bike at night, drunk. I stuck it on the backburner until after I saw that Johnny Cash bio-pic, where they sing that June Carter duet "Time's a Wastin'" together, (which they never did in real life.) So then I got this idea to write a nice country duet like that, but instead of it being all happy and fresh-new-relationship-let's-consummate-it kinda thing, I wanted it to be about people that hated each other intensely. People that were sick and tired of seeing each other everyday for years and years. Then, for an added twist, I forced my lovely wife to sing the harmony part. We actually do like each other, though.

Shopping Cart Guy

At our local supermarket there's a really happy guy that wrangles the shopping carts. He's really, really tall and kind of looks like Lurch. He is always smiling and so into his work that I always wonder what's going on in his head. He's my superhero.

Talking Rainpocalyse Rental Car Blues

And that's why you always buy the loss damage waiver when you rent a car. Man flies to Seattle, rents a PT Cruiser, drives to Olympic National Park to camp. Then one of the wettest months in regional history happens. The road washes out. While he and his companion are rescued, the car remains in the park, accruing rental charges. Rental company cuts him a deal. After 43 days and $871, the car is retrieved after emergency road repairs, and it's back in service at Sea-Tac.

Why does Beer not like me?

For some reason, the first few sips of beer give me sharp pains in my shoulder and elbow joints. First noticed it a few years ago and forgot all about it until last weekend as I only drink red wine and the occassional pint of cider now.

Visit Australia!

Australia is well known for having more than it's share of dangerous wildlife. However only a few examples are well known outside of the continent. The funnelweb spider might be Australia's most infamous horror. But the redback (a relative of the American black widow) and mouse spider both deserve your respect as well. Long hyped as causing severe ulceration, the reputation of the white-tailed spider might not be as deserved but is still a spider of concern. (more inside...)

Night Ice

"The Bible describes how to make ice on the desert. Please describe the procedure and explain how it fits your knowledge of heat transfer."

Your assignment: make ice in the desert. Without electricity. Without extra chemicals. Without extra gadgetry or imports. Oh, and the temperature is about 55 degrees (13C). It can be done, there is science behind it. And yet we seem to have forgotten something that everyone used to know.

Dracula Man X2 Alpha Turbo

Awesome stuff, guys. I'll represent retro/chip music: I'm involved in the niche hobby of writing new music with old videogame hardware. The music you are hearing was programmed in notepad using a TurboGrafx 16 (PC Engine). It's meant to combine Capcom and Konami videogame soundtracks of the late 80s, hence the weird title. I perform this music live in NYC, with guitars and lasers. I got awesome advice on Ask MeFi about how to get my equipment to shows, and as thanks I'll share my stuff with whoever might enjoy it. More of it is at my site, and my friends who also do this share it also.

In the Rain

Written last year for the sole purpose of having an easy, super-poppy song to learn to play the crappy used drum kit I had just bought in Kensington Market. This song wanted to go in a Beatle-y direction, but sadly I think it came out sounding more like The Oneders. It is what it is.
