I think that a thesaurus that was organized in terms of which adjectives typically go with which nouns would be really useful. Like, the adjectives that modify the verb "urge" (as in deep or unfulfilled, say). Same thing could be done for adverbs, e.g., ones that modify "talk" (relentlessly, incessantly, insightfully).
I am aware of WordNet and many other on-line lexical databases like the BNC. I'm looking for something like a compiled list, based on actual usage, of what modifies what.
thanks.

Sound Comparisons
is a database of different accents in English from all over the world. It provides soundfiles and
IPA transcriptions of 110 words in 110 separate dialects and Germanic languages closely related to English. Most dialects and languages are current but there are also reconstructions of older stages of English, Scots and Germanic. That makes for 12100 soundfiles that load directly into your browser. The site can be navigated either by dialect or individual word and there's also a
handy Google map of all the different dialects and languages. If you've ever wondered what the difference was between a Somerset and a Norwich accent, New Zealand and Australian, Canadian and American or Indian and Glaswegian,
Sound Comparisons is the site to go to.

I love reading sites like kottke.org and Neatorama (and, of course, Metafilter). It's exciting - I never know what I'll come across next. What are some other sites that have lots of interesting stuff, preferably on a daily basis (but less often is fine as long as the content is high quality)?

I'd like to stop using plastic grocery bags, but I use them as liners in all of my garbage cans (including the kitchen, where stuff thrown in tends to be moist food detritus). Any ideas on what to use as garbage liners in lieu of the plastic bags?

Most movies released lately are bad, unoriginal, trying to be good but failing at it, remakes of good movies, etc, etc.
Look at the list of movies I really like, and suggest me some good movies in similar genre.
I like many different types of movies but I don't like purely romantic movies or movies that are too slow paced.
I don't like movies dealing with war or combat (action is very ok).
The below list is not all the movies I've ever seen, it's just a selection of the movies I enjoy the most.
They don't have to be older movies, as long as they are quality movies.
Thanks!

What podcasts will make me more intelligent just by listening to them? I enjoy the BBC's "In Our Time", which features serious discussion of historical events and people by academics working in the field, and also quirky, thought-provoking programs like WNYC's "Radio Lab" and "This American Life". I'm not so keen on some of the podcasts I typically get from newspapers that gloss over the surface of a subject with little analysis. What other highbrow podcasts are made by people who really know their shit?

AskMe is quickly turning into my favorite food resource of all time. It's a vast treasure trove of practical, easy to make recipes and good food-related advice shared by regular folks, not food writers or even, necessarily, hardcore foodies. Can we have a thread consolidating the favorite/most useful recipes and advice AskMe has produced?

The world’s toughest animal.
Tardigrades, are sometimes called
water bears [embedded video] or moss piglets. They are the coolest things on 6 to 8 legs and are able to survive in extreme environments that would kill almost any other animal. Freeze them, boil them, dry them, expose them to
open space & radiation - after 200 years they'll still be alive! And some have just come back from a
a rocket trip.

When I'm looking for information on an old friend or doing a reverse phone lookup, it seems that the only places that have the information are sites like Intelius or US Search. Of course, we have to pay for the 'public records'. I'd like to know if it's possible to access these public records in another way without paying for them? It seems logical, but I haven't found an easy way to locate the information.
Thanks!

American Sign Language Flash Video Dictionary
is a high quality, free dictionary with a huge number of signs. It includes specialized dictionaries of religious signs, conversational phrases, and ASL for babies. Unfortunately it's not possible to link to specific signs, but if you look inside you'll find words from "Abbreviate" to "Zoom" and phrases such as "I cannot fasten my belt," "has he been neutered?" "I already took a bath," "are you married?" and "I need a better firewall."

I am looking for examples of secret / esoteric information and facts that changed your perspective on the world or caused you to say 'Now that's interesting, I haven't heard that before!'. For example, this recent thread contained information about
ADM that opened my eyes to the subtleties of the sugar markets. A simpler example of the type of knowledge I am looking for are the
interesting things that grocery stores do to increase sales. Or the unsubstantiated claim that more people speak English in China that they do in America. I am looking for interesting tid-bits of knowledge that you might find in books like The Tipping Point and Freakanomics. Something your Oxford educated, weed-smoking Uncle might whip out during a random conversation at a cocktail party.

Semi-retirement options: My wife and I have begun discussing the idea of selling everything and moving from Canada to a small warm-climate seaside village or town, 10 years from now. We're prepared to live very modestly, earning just enough to live on through some freelance design work and perhaps running a small cafe (open a few hours each day).

A friend and fellow bibliophile is having her first child. As a baby shower gift, I'd like to get her a nice children's book collection (in the $100 range). The 58-volume Dr. Seuss collection looked awesome, but at $500 is beyond my price range. I thought I'd get some ideas about what children's book collections you or your children have loved. (I'm thinking Hans Christian Anderson collections, etc.) She's having a girl if that makes a difference to your answer.

Is there anyplace that has a good television buyers guide? I'm familiar with
AVS Forum which seems like a good resource once you've narrowed it down to some choices, but I'm still a ways away from that point. I've also read some CNET articles which seem to suffer from the same kind of tunnel vision as I saw on AVS Forum, but of course it's possible I just didn't find the right article.

Comedy duo,
Ramenz (ラーメンズ), aka Kobayashi Kentaro and Katagiri Jin, also known as the Japanese versions of
Mac and PC, have recently done a number of shorts collectively called "The Japanese Tradition." Apparently, these tongue-in-cheek pseudo-instructional vids about famous aspects of Japanese culture (
Tea,
Chopsticks,
Sushi,
Origami,
Apology,
Onigiri, and
Relationships) have been fooling a lot of non-natives into thinking they are actual guides. (YouTube, each approx 4-6 min).
