Boston transplant needs local knowledge infusion, stat

I'm new to Boston (not here even a week yet). What should I be sure to see or do as I get settled? How do I fit in (and hide the fact that I'm from NYC)?

The Picky Introvert's Guide to Making Friends?

I'm a male introvert with very, very few close friends. I can make casual friends no problem, but I'm rather particular about the type of people I'd want to be serious friends with. Difficulty: I'm an atheist liberal eco-friendly vegetarian tech nerd who doesn't drink, smoke, or do drugs.

On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five; Hardly a man is now alive who remembers that famous day and year...

"We Nathaniel Mulliken, Philip Russell, [and 32 other men], All of lawful age, and inhabitants of Lexington, in the County of Middlesex...do testify and declare, that on the nineteenth [of April] in the morning, being informed that...a body of regulars were marching from Boston towards Concord...and soon found that a large body of troops were marching towards us...whilst our backs were turned on the troops, we were fired on by them, and a number of our men were instantly killed and wounded..."* Thus "the shot heard around the world" [video | 10:01] led American colonialists (eventually with the help of the French) on the path to founding a new nation [video | 54:04].

What ad campaigns have been adapted into feature films?

I just saw the trailer for the ostensibly terrible Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher vehicle, "What Happens in Vegas." Can anyone tell me if this is the first time that an ad campaign has been adapted into a feature film? I'd also like some background information about the ads themselves. Who is responsible for them? Where and when did the expression "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" originate?

COPS watching kids become cops like COPS but not like cops

Help me identify this Post Modern cultural theory. Prime example: cops on the TV show COPS act differently than they normally would, since they're being filmed for TV. Kids watch COPS thinking that's what cops actually are like. Kids eventually grow up and be cops themselves, emulating cops-on-TV, not "true" cops.

Mbira

Ever since I first heard mbira from Zimbabwe almost 30 years ago (via this record), I've been a lover of that enchanting, delicate and intricate music. It's only recently, however, that many of us who aren't actually players of the mbira could see just how the instrument is played: Holding the mbira, and scales - Lesson One - Two - Three - Four, and more and more. And here are some recommended mbira players and groups with MySpace Music pages worth checking out: Spirit Talk Mbira - Mbira Oracle - Kunzawa Mbira Group - Joel Laviolette.

Any Mefites with experience selling products via digital delivery?

I am looking at different methods of digital delivery/download/payment. (I have an ebook I will soon be offering.) PayPal offers this directly, I am somewhat familiar with e-junkie and I know there are others. Do we have any Mefites who have used any of these services, or knows of someone who has, and can share their experience? Suggestions? In advance, as always -- thank you!

As of 2008, what can science tell me about my genetics thru DNA testing.

Wondering if anyone here has had a Genealogical DNA test for purposes of learning more about your distant (ie. not recent/paternity) ancestors. I have questions about the differences (price, service, thoroughness) of the various companies offering this service, the type of data that different tests can produce, and ways this data can be (constructively) interpreted.

Folks, let's have a big hand, and a little hand, on the twelve.

No doubt about it, that old midnight hour has long served as a potent muse for songwriters, as this sampling of live performances will attest: In The Midnight Hour ---- Walking After Midnight ---- Midnight Rambler ---- Midnight Rider ---- Midnight Special ---- Midnight Train To Georgia ---- Midnight Confessions ---- Midnight At The Oasis --- 'Round Midnight ----

Unfortunately, the films are not narrated by a talking tortoise

MITOpenCourseWare offers an online high-school course on Douglas Hofstadter's much-loved 1980 Pulitzer-winning exploration of maths, patterns, music, art, recursion, and computability, Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. Previously, some here had indicated an interest in such a course.

Ia! Ia! Cambridge, MA Meetup!

The mystical calculations and dire sacrifices have been made. As foretold by Mad Seer Wendell, there shall be a strange and wondrous confluence of mods in the Cambridge, MA on April 26th for a dread convocation. Surely we mere mortals may appease these inscrutable powers by drinking and feasting in their honor! The Stars Are Right, my friends, and you too shall be Right if you arrive at the Cambridge Brewing Company from 7PM to help toast our weary mods after they finish with their horrible rites!

The Myth of the Media Myth: Games and Non-Gamers

"Inevitably, after I finish speaking, the strong opinions come. It happens the same way every time: People listen and then they say what they've been feeling. Videogames are not good for you. Videogames are a waste of time. They isolate children. Kids never go outside to play. They just sit there and stare at the TV all day."

Attacked by shadows

Ico did not sell very well. Though critics loved it, the simple third person puzzler failed to capture an audience on the PS2. (youtube trailer) Fast forward a few years to Shadow of the Colossus, and desiger Fumito Ueda struck gold. Earning tons of critical praise for his story of a young boy out to bring his love back from the dead.

Every scene must turn...

The Wager: "I'll bet you that video games will never become a significant form of cultural discourse the way that novels and film have. I'll bet you that fifty years from now they'll be just as mature and well-respected as comic books are today," posits game designer Steve Gaynor. Responses and rebuttals.

Best Bob Dylan album for somebody whose never heard him?

I've never given Bob Dylan a fair shake, and I'm starting to feel like I'm missing out. If there were one album (or two, if need be) that you consider to be an excellent primer or introduction to his music, what would it be?

Galleries of awesome pure CSS web designs using no/few images?

I'm looking for a showcase/inspiration gallery of imageless (or at least minimal graphics) pure CSS web designs. I figured this would totally have been done as a "Top X" list somewhere, but it doesn't seem to exist. Not necessarily "minimalist" design, but what can be done with great colour, layout, typography, and clever CSS.

Self-referentiality is so meta.

I'm writing a book that is heavily self-referential. How can I place markers in some other part of the document (ex: "For more information, refer to "Foo" on page "Bar") throughout the entire document and have that page Bar change as the information anchor moves around? I'm using Google Docs, but I'm willing to switch software if need be. Solution needs to be compatible with OSX.

How to teach myself computer science?

I want to teach myself computer science. I know that teaching myself is far from a university education on the subject, but I'd like to try. How can I teach myself? What are books/lectures/tools/websites/anything that I could use to do this? Covering everything from the programming languages themselves, to algorithms, software development, and the mathematics background necessary for this.
