How Can I Help You?

If you work (or have in recent memory) in a service position, what are the pet peeves/annoyances you remember most that people in general can fix? No matter if you're a dentist, waiter, teacher, or used car salesman, let us know (:

How do you manipulate the system?

What sorts of code words, specific language or techniques are used in your industry, profession, or area of expertise that can be used to manipulate the system? Or, what sorts of tricks have you found that work in similar ways?

How should I deal with my idiotic, condescending, and disrespectful boss?

I am good at what I do. I currently oversee a dept of about 10 people. I like the people in my department. I've had various opportunities to develop professionally until recently, and I am stuck doing a lot of unnecessary leg work due to lack of support. The problem is my boss and his boss. I have no respect for them, and most importantly, I don't see any further professional development, mainly because they're getting in the way of potential opportunities. Do I leave or stay (become bitter/mad/resentful of them)? If I stay, how do I deal with idiotic, disrespectful, and condescending boss? (more info inside)

What is this sort of joke called?

Is there a name for this style of joking? Set-up: Person A asks a question. Punchline: Person B -- by pretending to misunderstand the question -- gives an unexpected response. The Marx Bros used this style a lot, and I see it over and over on "Flight of the Conchords. " ALSO: Can anyone offer further examples of this? Thank you so much! :-)

Lavatories: Laboratories of Human Behavior

Inspired by this thread, I am interested in learning about idiosyncratic public restroom behavior.

How can I make fake, wearable whipcream?

I need to fake whipped cream for a costume. (Ok, I'll admit it: I'm trying to dress my dog as a slice of pie.) Is spray foam insulation safe? It won't be in contact with skin or fur. Any other ideas?

Bring me to the edge of my seat, and then push me over!

What's the most exciting novel you've ever read? I mean this in the simplest sense: an exciting plot. I'm looking for page-turners. Novels that keep you on the edge of your seat and refuse to let you sleep until you finish them. I'm looking for genre novels -- but I don't care what genres: Mystery, thriller, sci-fi, etc. (though sci-fi/fantasy has been done-to-death here, so I'm really more interested in other genres.) Oh, I care about words. So no matter how exciting, I'll quit reading if the prose is crappy.

How to look "more like yourself" in snapshots.

Do you "pose" for snapshots? Should I? It has been kindly brought to my attention that I look like crap in photos--worse than in person.
