What are the things and places that make living in Vancouver and Toronto fantastic for day-to-day life? Or, to put it another way, what are the things and places that you would miss if you moved away?

Villagers in the mountains of northern India and Pakistan have been
growing their own glaciers for centuries. They're small
domesticated glaciers, cultivated by hand, and they provide a reliable source of water for agriculture. Legend has it that they made glaciers to block mountain passes and keep the Mongol Hordes out! More detail in
New Scientist - subscription required, but you can probably see this
instruction sheet.

After reading
this question from last week I began to wonder: Are there any conventions/cliches in fiction that stray so far from reality that they distract you from the believability of the story and have no story telling merit?

It is freezing outside, and I just took inside a kitten (about a foot long). What do I have suitable for food beside milk that would not harm it? What can I improvise for a litter box? I do not want to go out shopping for cat stuff tonight.

Is there a term for this? What can it be a symptom of? Is it common?
Is it psychological, neurological, sth-else-ical?

I'm founding a small magazine, with some friends. What software should we use to lay out the magazine? I think we want something like Quark. It needs to be freeware, 'cause we're starting out really small, with minimal income (we'll just cover printing).

Couple of years ago I wrote this song for a songwriting competition. Sadly, I lost (read: deleted) all of the source tracks, so this mp3 is all I've got. It's about a slacker guy who's tired of getting crap from his woman about his partying and no-job having situation (I swear its not autobiographical. :) ), who on top of that finds out she's been stepping out with "Steve". :) First time posting to MeFiMusic, but I'm a longtime listener. Thanks for listening!

(Birthday filter)I am not young enough to know everything. -- Oscar Wilde- Today I turn 28, I have been extremely lucky in life (though this year was full of hiccups). Though this past year was a bit trying, I have plenty to be thankful for. I would love for you guys to give me some advice for the upcoming year. What do you wish you had known at 28 that you know now? Some pearls of wisdom would be the best gift I can ask for. Thanks guys!

In Nina Simone's
"Love Me or Leave Me" she plays a piano solo that incorporates a bit baroque* classical piano. Makes sense, since she was trained as a classical pianist, and the effect is wonderful. Please recommend some other songs or artists that use this kind of jazz/baroque combo.
* Disclaimer: I'm not a classical music expert, so I may have the terminology wrong. I welcome your corrections.
