Can anyone help me find any books, serious or not, on surviving a global catastrophe (of any kind), and/or any books with a central theme of love and hope (as a sort of guide to living happily while dealing with an extreme anxiety over the future of the planet and humanity)?

My fiancee and I are getting married in a month. We have kind of an embarrassingly large bridal party but we love them and want to give them cool presents! We're on a budget (we could probably spend up to $40 per attendant). We are open to creative ideas. Wedding is in San Francisco, and many attendants will be flying in from distant places.

I think after 20 years in my post it is almost time for a sabbatical leave. Should my board approve this idea, please help me to think about some fun and educational plans for a year-long sabbatical adventure. I am in the non-profit health sector, an MD executive with a primary focus in community health. I am especially interested in developing my insights and leadership towards the broad determinants of health from practical community based approachs. I think travel out of the US would be of interest to both my family and me.

I've sponsored the daughter of friends in a charity event. As part of the sponsorship, I can name a book for her to read. Here's where it gets interesting -- My friends' politics are left of center, while mine lean to the right, and I'd like to introduce their daughter to something she might not encounter otherwise. It should be age-appropriate and not over the top (like Atlas Shrugged). All suggestions appreciated.

Herbalife: Can anyone point me to sites about the efficacy of their products? I been on it for two months (no sniggering in the back, please), have lost some weight but I wonder what I am putting into my body. I know many regard it as MLM cult, etc (promising wealth and prosperity, but almost always meet with failure.) but I am interested in the actual products and whether there is any evidence they actually work.

Question for the guys: I've been reading "He's Just Not That Into You," which posits that if a guy is really interested in a woman, he'll pursue her relentlessly, no matter what else is going on in his life. Is this a valid theory? Has there ever been a time when you really liked a woman and were attracted to her, but didn't pursue a relationship because of external factors that had nothing to do with her (e.g. work problems, family illness, trauma of past relationship)?

I am almost done with college. Since I've started, four separate times I've taken a semester off to study abroad, work overseas or do unorthodox things in the name of adventure. I've come to terms with myself and I know that this is I want out of life, and I know that when I graduate I'm not going to get a steady job with benefits or any of those other things that responsible people are supposed to do. How do I explain this to the people I care about in a way that makes them feel good about me?

Women's rights: What's in it for men?
- "Women in rich countries largely enjoy gender equality while those in poor countries suffer substantial discrimination. This column proposes an explanation for the relationship between economic development and female empowerment that emphasises changes in the incentives males face rather than shifts in moral sentiment. Technological change that raises demand for human capital may give men a stake in women's rights."

Are there a lot of people who are recognizably as beautiful as supermodels who are
not supermodels? Or do the present mechanisms of celebrity reliably account for a majority of people who meet the criteria to be supermodels?

Help a miserable 20something deal with her paranoid, overprotective father!
Long story short: I need help dealing with an overprotective parent. His behavior and beliefs have been debilitating both developmentally and socially, and I can't stand to watch another stagnant year go by. I need to start living my life.
I'm a 20 year old girl and a bit of an old soul. I've already graduated from college with honors and I'm almost done with my master's. I have a full time job. I'm attractive, I take care of myself, I have everything I want in the material sense, but I'm miserable. I don't have friends. I've never dated. I don't go out. I have no sense of enjoyment in my life. I don't know how to interact with people or cope with my anxiety.

Trying to put together a playlist of anti-American songs, or songs about leaving America. For instance, Green Day's "American Idiot" qualifies. This is for a going-away party, and very much tongue-in-cheek. Songs that hate on specific regions (particularly New York, New Jersey, DC and LA) are also good. Thank you!

Imagine a contest, with 21 judges and 4 contestants. Judges must give one contestant 4 points, one contestant 3 points, one contestant 2 points, and one contestant 1 point. The winner is decided by summing the scores of all 21 judges. Mathematically speaking, what percentage of the time would you expect there to be a tie for first place after all 21 scores have been added?

A family member born in another country recently became a US Citizen and got a US passport. Her old country does not allow dual citizenship and would revoke her citizenship if they found out about her becoming a US citizen, but she still wants to use the native passport on trips to the native country and retain her citizenship.
