This brings back tons of memories - I lived in Berlin during the height of the cold war. I have some pictures here and here (there's some duplication, obviously). I can't imagine Berlin now- it's clear that the city I knew (and loved) is gone.

So ... is there a site history or site historian? An article? Timeline?

The wiki has a good Timeline page that covers a lot of the epochal events in the site's history. It's slowly growing; folks should definitely add anything that they notice is missing (and don't forget to cite appropriate comment/thread).

You might want to consider that Italian immigrants to the United States probably did not come from all regions of Italy in equal numbers or distribution.

To illustrate this, here's a (very cool) Italian surname map generator. insert the last name ("cognome") into the box at top left and check out the map. In learning German, I was told that the best way to learn to articles associated with each noun was straight memorization. I questioned my German tutor about the function of the articles and she said that there wasn't really any function at this time.

I recall an unflattering profile (probably in an embarrassing category of magazine...) where the journalist was invited by the married Arnold, after drinks and dinner, to go out into the wilds of Los Angeles and get themselves some "plo chops". At first, the guy literally didn't understand; when he did, he declined, baffled. This was someone that Schwarzenegger knew was writing a magazine profile of him and collecting dirt.
