All time favorite comment?
I love Miko's best way to break up with someone.
My favorite comment from the "open source boob project" thread.
Ian A.T.'s post-apocalyptic view of what a queuing system for AskMeFi questions might be like.
I too love a good "footprints" reference.
Tricking McDonald's into telling you what's in their hamburgers.
And I still really want this site to... [more]

The Lost Border: Photographs of the Iron Curtain
This brings back tons of memories - I lived in Berlin during the height of the cold war. I have some pictures here and here (there's some duplication, obviously). I can't imagine Berlin now- it's clear that the city I knew (and loved) is gone.
That said, Berlin is still a great city, a marvelous place, and I don't think all the political changes in the world would change that. Still, there was something special about being 'inside the wall': The interminable scrutiny... [more]

MeFi's 2d wave turns three.
So ... is there a site history or site historian? An article? Timeline?
The wiki has a good Timeline page that covers a lot of the epochal events in the site's history. It's slowly growing; folks should definitely add anything that they notice is missing (and don't forget to cite appropriate comment/thread).

If you ever want to email more than one MeFi user...
Is it the quality of the post or because you are a bunch of cunts?
A priest decides to take a walk to the pier near his church. He looks around and finally stops to watch a fisherman load his boat. The fisherman notices, and asks the priest if he would like to join him for a couple of hours. The priest agrees. The fisherman asks if the priest has ever fished before, to which the priest says "no". He baits the hook for him and says,... [more]

Et Tu, Bompensiero
You might want to consider that Italian immigrants to the United States probably did not come from all regions of Italy in equal numbers or distribution.
To illustrate this, here's a (very cool) Italian surname map generator. insert the last name ("cognome") into the box at top left and check out the map. If you insert "Proetto", for example, you'll see that most Proettos live in Sicily, which makes sense, as that's where we're from. Click on the... [more]

Ask post:
A German gentleman writes a masculine letter of feminine love to a neuter young lady
In learning German, I was told that the best way to learn to articles associated with each noun was straight memorization. I questioned my German tutor about the function of the articles and she said that there wasn't really any function at this time.
There's no function, really (though it is fun being able to distinguish der Tor, from das Tor), but there are patterns. Nouns ending in -ung,... [more]

Arnold the Barbarian?
I recall an unflattering profile (probably in an embarrassing category of magazine...) where the journalist was invited by the married Arnold, after drinks and dinner, to go out into the wilds of Los Angeles and get themselves some "plo chops". At first, the guy literally didn't understand; when he did, he declined, baffled. This was someone that Schwarzenegger knew was writing a magazine profile of him and collecting dirt.

MySpace & RSS Obituary Wall Remembers the Dead
Hello everyone. Now, before you rip me apart because I'm posting this image, I want you to know that it does serve a purpose and I don't think there's anything like it out there.

Thanks for the opportunity.

mathowie's community weblog
(with apologies to Arlo Guthrie

and pretty much everybody else)
This song is called mathowie's community weblog, and it's about mathowie, and the community weblog, but mathowie's community weblog is not the name of the community weblog, that's just the name of the song, and that's why... [more]
