Willie Mae's grab-you-in-the-gut blues

Elvis rode to fame on one of her covers and Janis got rich on her signature song, but you haven't truly heard Hound Dog or Ball & Chain until you've experienced Big Mama Thornton belting them out. A seminal blues figure who could play the harp with the best of them, she was true original. In her heyday, Willie Mae was a 6-foot tall, 350-pound, gun-toting crossdresser who led a rough and colorful life and took no guff whatsoever. Emaciated but still powerful, she gives a final raw and expressive performance of Ball & Chain and Hound Dog shortly before her death in 1984.

Christened an Engelmacher, or "angel-maker"

NURSE CHILD WANTED, OR TO ADOPT -- The Advertiser, a Widow with a little family of her own, and moderate allowance from her late husband's friends, would be glad to accept the charge of a young child. Age no object. If sickly would receive a parent's care. Terms, Fifteen Shillings a month; or would adopt entirely if under two months for the small sum of Twelve pounds. This kindly nineteenth-century advertisement had a hidden meaning. If a woman paid her adoption fee to a baby farmer and handed over her infant, no one ever had to worry about that baby, ever again.

Is it safe to use proxy servers from public lists on the web?

I am outside the US but would like to watch some online TV episodes from US networks websites. I have found many lists of US-based proxy servers online that I could try, but I am concerned about security -- would using such a proxy server make me more vulnerable to viruses, worms, spam, and/or other such things? Many thanks.

Help the average Jane with a statistics question?

An acquaintance who's a university professor on the hiring committee for his department cried 'sexism!' when 50% of the candidates who were asked back for interviews were women, when only 18% of the initial applicants for the position were women. I rebutted. Who's right?

How about, like, playing a Hoover on my ding dong here

The awesomeness of 70s porn dialogue and non-sex scenes. All YouTube links, all more or less NSFW. Bat Pussy rides to the recue on a Hoppity Hop. The Swedes do their version of an animated Snow White. "Can I see your thing now?" More Swedish goodness. "What kind of deals did you have in mind?" And a young Ron Jeremy tries his moves on Seka.

Oh mon cher

A short song in French complete with banjo and an electric chord organ, which thankfully only has a few keys so can be played by a chump like me.

Overheated

I recently dislocated my shoulder, and assumed music was out of the picture for a month or two. But I was getting pissed off at not playing, and discovered if I capoed everything up really high and didn't play anything too fancy, my arm could handle short bursts of pickin'. So I made a simple song, part French and part English.

Sidewinder

Tuned the guitar way down and added some banjo. This song does this thing where it equates "snake" with "girl." Like a metaphor, see. Also: it seems to play better through headphones (possibly because of the use of stereo). But maybe I just have bad speakers.

In the Rain

Written last year for the sole purpose of having an easy, super-poppy song to learn to play the crappy used drum kit I had just bought in Kensington Market. This song wanted to go in a Beatle-y direction, but sadly I think it came out sounding more like The Oneders. It is what it is.

Help me find some swinging bachelorettes

Since I seem to be hurtling towards old maidhood, I’d like enjoy the ride as much as possible. It irritates me that single women are so often portrayed as sadsacks just marking time until they can get married, or as being eaten up with bitterness and neuroses because they never found a man. So, I’m looking for positive role models and inspiration. What examples of fabulous freewheeling women can you think of in fiction, movies and real life?

What on earth is going on in children's heads?...

What on earth is going on in children's heads?

I have no memory of being a child, and certainly none of what sort of things I thought about when I was a kid. As an adult, I see kids do inexplicable things and wonder just how the heck they thought to say/do such strange things; and I see kids witness/experience things that they have no framework whatsoever for understanding.

What goes on in a kid's brain? Is it noise, is it long ponderings, is it blank, is it confused, etc. Any idea what "it sounds like" inside there?

I recently had a major epiphany. The kind that has resulted in a rather radical shift in how I live and the choices I make each day: "You don't own the stuff-- the stuff owns you." Sure, you might think it facile or cliche, but since this new framework suddenly, deeply and firmly established itself in my noggin, I have stopped buying stuff all the time (like I used to) and I have been relentlessly getting rid of all the crap I had accumulated over 15 years. My question is what major epiphany have you had most recently and how has it changed your life?
