Makin' Bacon

I just opened up my box of pork bellies (to cure my own bacon, duh) and discovered that the skin in still on. This wasn't mentioned in my recipe and I can't find any real info about it! Do I leave the skin on? Remove it? Remove it before it's been cured (wet-cure), before it's been cold-smoked, or before I eat it? I'm using the recipe from this episode of Good Eats.

Like an iPhone, only scarier

Name that science-fiction story (yes, another one): I recall reading an SF short story in which everyone carries around a little gadget that always tells them what to do, which everyone willingly obeys, and without which everyone is helpless. I think the gadgets were called "little brother." The story probably dates back to the 50s or 60s (I read it in the 80s—this has nothing to do with Cory Doctorow's "Little Brother," which I have not read).

Indie platformer extravaganza!

Do you enjoy classic 2D platformers? Then boy, are you in luck! The indie game community is thriving, and a good majority of its games are exactly that. I've spent many hours playing these unique, beautiful, and often exceptional projects, and there's quite a few - more than I can count on my fingers! - that could stand toe-to-toe with the finest contemporary games. Inside is a list of some of the greatest indie platformers, based on community recommendations and my own experience. Enjoy!

Cheap NYC fun

The Staten Island Ferry is said to be "one of the best values in New York City" because it's free and offers great views of the city. What are other "best values" in NYC, including shopping, food, activities, and anything else that's surprisingly inexpensive.

Cheapest Flight to Anywhere

Cheapest Flight to Anywhere: I have a large flight credit on Continental Airlines that I need to use with in the next few months. I'd like to find the cheapest ticket for a same day departure/return so that I can get the remaining balance refunded. Is there somewhere I can find all Continental flights originating from Newark, NJ (EWR) over the next few months? Kayak.com is great but I have to know the destination to get the prices.

Google account disappears -- help!

We had a Google account which stored photos in Picasa web albums, and paid for extra storage. One day, the account simply disappeared. We contacted Google. They replied "Because our investigation was inconclusive, we can't provide you with access to this Google Account. ... we take privacy and security of our users very seriously. For this reason, we're unable to reveal any further information about the account you'd like to access." This is Kafka-esque. We can't figure out how to get any more information or help. Any idea what to do?

Web 2.0 Vaudeville

A woman walks into a bar and asks the bartender for a double entendre, so he gave it to her. Ba-dum dum. What's green and has wheels? Grass. I lied about the wheels. Ba-dum dum. A baby seal walks into a club. (pause) Ba-dum dum. How many kids with ADD does it take to change a lightbulb? LET'S GO RIDE BIKES! Ba-dum dum. A priest, a rabbi, and a minister walk into a bar. The bartender says, "What is this, some kind of joke?" Ba-dum dum. Instant Rimshot. For all those times you need a big red Flash button that'll give you a well-timed rimshot. (Jokes courtesy of Ask Mefi.)

Anything other than Contiki?

Travelling +strangers is better than travelling alone right? Well, that's a dilemma my friend (I swear, it's a friend!) is in this summer as he has time off but none of his friends do. He would like to go to Europe but be a bit social about it. Everyone mentions Contiki but I want to know if they might have any competitors that people feel are better. Do they?

Where in the NE US can a new backpacker get his backpacking wings?

I have decided to spend my (non-hypothetical) vacation backpacking alone for the week, in the mid-atlantic or northeastern US. However, I am not sure where is best for me to do this, as I have a number of minor concerns and have not done extended backpack travel on a schedule like this -- at least not as a civilian. Specific concerns follow, and overlap somewhat, so apologies for that.
