Ask post: How do I go about feeling GREAT?
The happiest man alive then, is a Adderal popping, weed smoking, vigorously exercising, loving partner screwing, bubble-bath running, meditating, surf bum. Sounds about right.

Things that help foster happiness:

Take a big freaking vitamin every morning. Proper nutrition is absolutely critical.

Get really great sheets - make your bed really outstanding. (also meaning, get more sleep)

I get a ton of pleasure from really great food, especially food I've made myself.

Exercise is fantastic, as little as an hour a day twice a week. I walk once a day, but it's better when I... [more]

MeFi post: The Middler
Ok - the SSL/Cookies thing for dummies:

(full disclosure, former intern at Google, doing a PhD in computer security. None of this violates my NDA.)

First off, you need to know that when you are using a public wireless network (coffee shops, your university, etc), your Internet browsing can be eavesdropped upon by anyone else nearby. They can see which web pages you visit, which IMs you send, and which *ahem* adult image you are looking at.... [more]

Ask post: Help me, my mother is a drama queen!
If you're unhappy somewhere, just move out. You have enough money to do, so stop your whining and go where you're happy. Rent a cheap place for a few months till you're ready to move into someplace better.

The longer you stay with your mum, the more you'll become like her.

Ask post: Stuck between Rev and a hard place
Okay, here is what you do.

Tell him if he cares about your soul that he needs to spend time praying for it instead of talking to you. Because the Bible clearly states that no one comes to Jesus unless the Father draws him...in other words, your conversion is up to God.

And from THIS Christian's point of view, that is a win-win situation. Because even I know that badgering you about it WILL NOT CHANGE ANYTHING.

MeFi post: Jezebelism
Was coming back to post this: Winstead's (probable) homework; a recent jezebel shitstorm where Tracie made some jokey comments about Roman Polanski's statutory rape rap and got a lot of shit about it

People actually read the posts where it's a copy/paste of an IM conversation? I never do. If they didn't bother to take the time to really write it, I don't bother reading it.

MeFi post: Kids? Who'd have 'em?
Here's as good a place as any, right?

I always tell people that I don't remember the bad times in life very well. Its not that I think I'm blocking them out, its that I think I actively choose to remember the better things, and the things I'd rather not remember kind of fade into the mist in the corners of the brain. Maybe they're still there, but I live a fairly normal life without them, most of the time, anyway.

My adolescent years were not... [more]

Ask post: Is brainfog from age or something else?
Now in my 40s, I am just as sharp as I was in my 20s. But I went through a foggy period and many people I know are mired in it. Here's my theory: the brain is a "muscle." If you don't give it long, daily workouts, it gets flabby.

When you're a kid, everything is new and your brain is constantly at work just trying to figure out the world. It doesn't feel like work. It's just what happens. Then there's school. I don't think much of the American school system. I... [more]

MeTa post: Queuing questions.
In the sub-basement of what was once an industrial park, the server continued asking questions to the void. The network was long-gone--the ethernet cables vaporized right where they emerged to the surface--but this didn't stop the server. It had a queue.

The third wave of bombings had collapsed the ceiling, destroying almost all the other racks in the room, but the server remained. It was closest to the large metal cage that held the enormous emergency power supply. It... [more]

Ask post: No, you make MY logo bigger.
Sounds like you need to learn more about the world (on the whole) works:

1. Do things you don't like for money.
2. Do things you like for free.
3. On the occasions when you get money for something you like, count yourself lucky.

It's all about managing expectations.

Ask post: Help me help a friend cut lots of precise tiny holes
The real problem seems to lie in the cutting of the pages. Each page would need a unique die, and it must precisely line up with the printed image.

If he just wants a small run, he should look into laser cutting, maybe with Ponoko or a company near you. Alternately he could buy a Craftrobo cutting machine (like a desktop printer, but it cuts stuff instead of printing) and do it himself, a friend of mine has one to make stencils with and loves it.... Ask post: Better living through alcohol(ism?)
I'm unclear about what aside from anecdotal evidence to the contrary you're seeking by framing your question as you have. You're obviously a grown woman and an intelligent one, as well. You're in law school so presumably you know how to conduct research. You're capable of looking up the facts about protracted alcohol intake and its effects on your liver, your heart and your brain over time. You can read all the websites about recovery from alcohol addiction, the physical and emotional and... [more]

MeFi post: BoxHead
I bet other people have said this before, but if they have I haven't seen it, so this is original in that respect. I think that zombies terrify people because they are a metaphor for death. They are mindless. They are not out to get you specifically, they are out to get everyone. They aren't planning to get you, they are just going to get you one day, no matter what you do. They are relentless. You can run away, you can board yourself up in a house or mall or church, but they will just keep... [more]

MeFi post: Michael Richards, Racist Comedian
INT. JERRY'S APARTMENT. DAY.

KRAMER comes CRASHING through JERRY’s door, hits the couch and falls onto the coffee table, SMASHING it to pieces
JERRY (peeved)

Kramer, what the hell are you doing?

KRAMER

Well, I’m sorry, Jer. But did you see who was moving in next door to me?

JERRY

Oh yeah, Frank. I just met him in the elevator. Nice... [more]

Ask post: A child exposed himself to my child at day care
As a parent of a 3 year old boy who likes to yell "Come look at my big giant penis!" as he's going potty, I know two things:
1. It's perfectly innocent on his part
2. If he was doing it in public I'd want to know, because we live in a zero-tolerance world where kids can be shamed, ostracized and punished by other hyper-vigilant people who have their own issues to work out, and also a handful of creepy old men who would be delighted by his offer.

Ask post: How to escape a college tutor's blackmail?
What proof does the blackmailer have?

The best strategy I would say, although it is immoral and not nice but it would be a premptive one.

A. Stall him for about 2 days until you can get the following done:

1. Make sure she knows her shit. Know and understand the cousework.

2. Sign up for 7 ~ 10 free email accounts through Tor.

3. Now in the style of the blackmailer email... [more]

Ask post: How to get a regularly clean-looking bikni line?
Tend Skin works great for these issues. The active ingredient in it is salicylic acid.

Here's a recipe for a relatively crude homemade version.

(Warning: it smells like vinegar and if you put it on freshly shaved/waxed areas it stings like a mo fo. Eventually your nervous system won't feel it as a sting but it takes a few times to build up to that level. Also do not use if you are allergic to aspirin. And, finally, IANAD. I am just sharing...
