The apartment building I'm moving into might be haunted. I know it's not rational to believe in ghosts, but I'm kind of superstitious.

While many ailments are considered terrifying,
Lesch-Nyhan is the stuff of nightmares. An extremely rare genetic neurological disorder with no cure, it often compels its victims to self-mutilate, even when they understand that doing so causes them harm.
Richard Preston used Lesch-Nyhan as a plot device in his best-selling thriller
The Cobra Event, and went on to write a fascinating article about the disease, its sufferers, and its implications for human behavior in the
New Yorker. [PDF].

After a comprehensive study of 400 oil fields, the
International Energy Agency has concluded that, barring a substantial decrease in demand, the world faces an oil supply shortfall of 12.5 million barrels a day by 2015--15% of current production. [

Academic discussions of stock markets frequently reference
The Efficient Markets Hypothesis; an idea that share prices are fairly valued, their prices reflecting all available information. However folklore such as
"Sell in May and go away", which proved prudent in 2007, clashes with this theory.

I'd never put only "question" here. I don't call my dog "Dog" or write out a check "for
money Dollars". When I call 911 and request a firetruck, they don't call me back and speak the words "a firetruck" and hang up. Why is it normal to congratulate someone by saying "congratulations"?

Inspired by
this thread; has anyone every hired an architect? How do you do it? What sorts of things should I be looking for? How do I go about finding one that specializes in "weird". (By weird I mean, not your standard mcmansion floor plan.) What do architects charge to design a building. And do they oversee the building process as a rule, or no?

What's the French-language equivalent, dialogue-wise, of
The West Wing? Witty, erudite, and fun dialogue is the only requirement. The series/movie being any good would also be nice. Either TV or movies would be fine.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the
Holodomor. The
Holodomor was the starvation of millions of Ukranians at the hands of the Soviets. The Ukranian government is using this year to push for greater recognition for the genocide. Ukranian communities in
Australia,
Canada and all over the globe are holding events all year in the lead up to this years Holodomor day on November 25.

"Everyone laughs a little too hard for a little too long, not because we find these sentiments funny, but because we’re awkwardly acknowledging how unfunny they are. At their core, they pose one of the most complicated, painful, and pervasive dilemmas many single women are forced to grapple with nowadays: Is it better to be alone, or to settle?
My advice is this: Settle!"
