MeFi post: 13 shot venti soy hazelnut vanilla cinnamon white mocha with extra white mocha and caramel
So I was having this regular americano at Starbucks with my girlfriend, and my wife walked in.

I'm tired of hearing this over and over. The answer is .81 repeating.

MeFi post: "Our country for the first time in my life time has abandoned the basic principle of human rights," Carter said
I'd have no problem torturing a terrorist in order to preserve the most hallowed human right of all, "life" for those the terrorist might intend to kill. I am fairly certain that our country has done so, and will do so in the future given reason.

And what if raping his wife would help? What if murdering his children.

You want context, here's context: There are certain things so abominable they cannot be justified,... [more]

No. You don't get to ask for a healthy, respectful discussion about torture. Shall we have a healthy, respectful discussion about whether whether all women should be required to have a full cliterodectomy for their own good? Shall we have a nice polite back and forth about whether the Jews deserved to be rounded up and killed? It's the same goddamn thing.

Just because you feel passionate about something and feel there is an injustice, that does not... [more]

Possibly unlike many posting to this thread I've seen the effects of torture in the flesh*. I've also known actual torturers who committed these crimes. Its hard to speak academically about such matters when you've witnessed the terrible scarring (physical and psychological) that torture has left on both victim AND torturer. However, I thought I would say a few things on the matter.

The primary purpose of torture has always been akin to terrorism as someone already... [more]

MeFi post: Too Racist? Or Too Stupid?
I had to say this. I'm sorry because I only made it about halfway down the comments page before I got incensed and had to make this point. I'm sorry because, in all likelihood, somebody has already made this point previously. I'm sorry because I knew that I would have to make this point before I even clicked on any of the links. I'm sorry in a dad-shaking-his-head kind of way that I have to make this point to people who are otherwise well-informed, well-intentioned, and, well, well-thinking. But... [more]

Yes, the voters.

MeFi post: Orwell was an optimist
This reminds me of a time at work when a coworker was TRYING to cite Murphy's Law, but ended up naming Occam's Razor instead.

Which led me to invent (of course) Murphy's Razor.

"All things being equal, the simplest explanation is that whatever could go wrong, did."

It really does explain everything.
