i want candy!

I want to recreate some delicious candied herbs I'd purchased in Italy several years ago, and am utterly unable to find a recipe for candy-coating herbs or making dragees. To clarify, I'm looking to achieve the hard candy coating you find on Jordan Almonds or on the candied fennel seeds you find as part of mukhwas at Indian restaurants. The only advice I've found is in this book from 1800 - surely someone has made these since then!

Is there an official name for a book's "opening quote"?

What do you call the opening quotes that often preface a novel? Many thrillers, mysteries, and what-have-you include a single quote in the book's front matter, something to capture the story's essence or set the stage. Sometimes these quotes are literary, and sometimes they're drawn from pop culture figures. But other than "opening quote," is there an official name? All the other pages and parts of a book have a formal name, but what about the quote?

Education with your host, DaShiv.

Over the last few months one of the Metafilter regulars has produced a number of comments demonstrating an above average grasp of the democratic parties political process as well as an above average ability to articulate that understanding in to language that highlights the substance of the comments.

magical balls

This fun Japanese contact juggler's clip is proving popular lately, but he is not the first Japanese practitioner of the art to surface online. Here are several more highly entertaining Japanese contact juggler clips worth watching: one, two (starts about 1:06), three, four, five. (all via the highly entertaining Ministry of Manipulation's blog).

What's that material that swaps between images as you tilt it called?

What's the proper name for that kind of image-switching material that switches between two pictures as you tilt it? I mostly associate it with novelty baseball cards, toys, children's books, and so forth. That plastic-y corrugated stuff? If I wanted to order a bunch of postcards printed with it, what am I looking for?

Who predicted the existence of the internet as a "web you can dip in and out of"?

I once read a book that described a man who predicted the existence of the internet thirty years before its time. He anticipated "a web of information that you can dip in and out of" -- that's the closest to the original quote I can muster. If I'm recall correctly, he was a writer or academic or McLuhan-era media pundit, most likely American. It might also have been a character in a sci-fi book. Can anyone identify the source?

I'll stop whining about whites if you suggest some great wine!

I'm a red wine snob. But I was wine tasting last week and got persuaded to try a Ravenswood muscato. I loved it! It was sweet, but tart, crisp, and refreshing, and I'm looking for more.

Mein Sci-Fi Kampf

There was a post (I believe on Boing Boing) a few months ago about a sci-fi short story in the form of an internet message board. The message board was for a group of time travelers, and the new members were always being scolded for going back in time and killing Hitler (this was against the rules, as without Hitler we wouldn't have many technologies, etc etc). I have Google strings that I've tried inside...

Best ways to prepare slabs of chicken?

I've been trying to make chicken dishes that don't rely on the usual pasta or rice+sauce+chicken combination. I have not been successful. I'm looking for chicken recipes and techniques that rely less on pasta and rice, and more on imparting flavor to the chicken itself.

Best/cheapest US bank for initiating international wire transfers online?

All the better to see you with

As a photographer, you need to get close to your subject. But sometimes things get between you and your subject. Things such as state lines, restraining orders, and guard patrols that can keep you miles away from the people you want to shoot. What do you do at times like this? Get a bigger lens.
