MeTa post: What'd I miss?
Well, desjardins, I'll just say what everyone else is thinking but is too afraid to say.

You see, desjardins, you were banned. That's right, banned. Two days after you stopped checking the site, people started asking after you. Is she okay, omg what happened to her, etc. We were worried, quite frankly. But then some people pointed out that maybe you'd moved on to a better site. Maybe we weren't good enough for you. Then someone correctly noted... [more]

MeFi post: Boring men?
I guess Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus! LOL!

The problem is that the women quoted in the article, who are quite obviously insufferable hens, confuse men's conversation filters with being boring. But these women would never want to have the conversation that would ensue if men simply said what was on their minds. For example:

F: My God, you're so boring!

M: What?

F: Boring! You... [more]

Just tossing this one out there (we don't use a style guide at work, although we should):
O'Reilly Stylesheets and Style Guide

It's focused more on the low-level elements of style, but might be what you're looking for. I've always found the O'Reilly technical publications to be pretty easy to read.

Ask post: Help me before I melt
If your system has lost its refrigerant charge, your compressor will not cycle, thanks to a low pressure switch; this is to protect your compressor. Usually, the compressor clutch is prevented from engaging by a control circuit which turns the clutch on and off as needed, normally. When the low pressure switch says there isn't enough refrigerant, the control circuit is simply not ever allowed to energize the compressor clutch; the drive belt will look like it is turning the compressor pulley,... Ask post: A bit on bittorrents
Wikipedia entry.

Seeds are people who have the whole file, peers are those still grabbing it (i.e. they have part of it, and since you are downloading parts from multiple sources, you can be getting the parts a peer has from them).

As for optimising - keeping an eye on how many sources your client is set to connect to is the best way. I find that some torrents will seem to bog down my incoming connections, and others I am getting less data in... [more]

Ask post: Software for long documents
Word sucks but it's what your using. I've recently reconciled myself to using Word, mainly by slavishily using styles always, and this. Word's one redeeming feature is that it's a pretty nice environment for doing tables.

Use headings captions and cross references religiously. Read this.

One document per chapter and knit together at the end.

Consider moving from Endnote to Zotero.

There's a great website out there with tips on using Word to write long documents -- e.g. using Styles to format your document template instead of weighing the document down with repetitive codes.

Ask post: Small Form Factor PC in NYC?
Being in Seattle, I don't really know where you could go to walk into a store and buy a micro pc out of the box in NYC, but I do know you'd pay about twice as much as you would if you bought online and snapped it together yourself.

Also, Shuttle cases are larger than HTPC (Home theater) cases, and more expensive, so if you want something of comparable size and price as a Mini, go for the HTPC.

Anyway, here's what I priced out on Newegg in about 5... [more]

Ask post: ipod-to-itunes metadata syncing: help a girl out.
You can limit autosync to specific playlists.

Yes, this is how I manage to squeeze a 40GB library onto a 20GB iPod. My "iPod Worthy" smart playlist is pretty simple: exclude songs that are 1 or 2 stars, limit to 15GB, selected by highest rating, match only checked items. So a 3 star or higher rating will guarantee a spot on the iPod, while unrated songs get randomly selected from. Add to this my other playlists like Added Today and whatnot,... [more]

Ask post: Windows network permission issues (access denied)
I'd first suggest setting the containing folder to have Administrators/Full Control, with the setting for child objects to automatically inherit permissions. Then look to see what the owner is.

If the owner is correct, then you just need to set up permissions. What I usually do is create three local (machine) groups for any given share.... I call them Share Name RO, RW, and Admin. Then I put organizational groups from Active Directory into those local groups, and... [more]

None of those letters or numbers seem random. Instead, I can detect concentration involved in selecting them. No doubt you went to school for this, likely studying under the great Du Champ given your preference for numbers before letters. Your intensity, particularly in the way X is used, evoking both kisses and treasure, is to be admired. First, be smart from the very beginning. Pulverize all teeth, burn off fingerprints, and disfigure the face. Forcing a DNA test to establish identity (if it ever comes to that) might introduce the legal/forensic hurdle that saves your ass down the line. An unidentifiable body can, in a pinch, be dressed in thrift store clothes and dropped in a bad part of town where the police are less likely to question it. I don't reommend that disposal method, I'm just saying an easily identifiable body is an... [more]

George Musser wiped the tears from his eyes as he stood before his New God. Constructed of aluminum chair frames, old circuit boards, and an old one horse merry-go-round George 'liberated' from the local K-Mart, the New God was a thing of almost sublime beauty.

Ask post: what happens in a mexican strip club?
Given that even in the US, some strip clubs are tacitly prostitution fronts I don't think anyone will be able to answer the question unless they went and experience the club personally. That said, I don't believe you will find the answer you are looking for by looking for evidence that Mexican strip clubs cater to prostitution. Even if girls offered extra services beyond stripping, there is no way anyone can prove your boyfriend engaged in such activities.
