The Sirens Sang of Murder Mysteries

Can you recommend some good mystery novels for me to read? The last mystery novels I read that I really liked were the Hilary Tamar series by Sarah Caudwell. I liked those because they were fairly light and not gory. But I especially liked them because the dialogue/narration was sharp, witty, and wry. What are some other mystery writers who write like this?

Creep me out, literally

Recommend some books/collections of short stories or even poetry I would like if I am looking for some disturbing reads. I mean the kind of horror/thriller/sci-fi/fantasy/creepy stories that stick in your head for days after you read them causing you to think about them over and over or leave you too scared to turn off your bedroom lights and go to sleep.

What was the one thing - gadget, gizmo, piece of clothing, etc. - that made your travels that much more enjoyable?

What is that printmaking symbol called?

What is that symbol one finds at the beginnings or endings of chapters of books called? It's like a little arabesque, but with a (reasonably) flat bottom or top.

Recommend me some good post-apocalyptic movies and books

I have just found out I'm a big fan of post apocalyptic fiction books. Somehow I like the idea of an individual or small group of survivors almost alone in the world trying to find out what the hell happened to the planet and fighting for their survival. What are some good books and movies the hive mind can recommend?

Scifi: is it worth a cat's pockets?

My girlfriend's mother and I have a real intellectual rapport, in some ways. Recently we've been talking about literature. She's extraordinarily widely read, but only really within the canon. I've been fronting, claiming that genre fiction like sci-fi has plenty of stuff of genuine literary merit in it. She's called my bluff and asked for a recommendation. What would you suggest? I was thinking something strange and ornate like Cordwainer Smith, but am open to advice.

Drilling for Dollar$

I'm mid 40s, have had 2 cavities in my life, to date, one in my late teens and another 15 years later. My dentist from childhood retired in 1999. Since then I have consulted a dif't dentist each year, for a total of 7 dental "exams". Each one has alerted me to various work I need done to my teefs, which I declined to have done. None has ever "diagnosed" a problem remotely similar to any of the preceeding dentists. Each has found something new. The science of Dentistry is a profession exactly how? How can I ever find an honest dentist?

Peanut Allergies- surely not something new?

A then-and-now type question on food (specifically peanut) allergies. Mrs. Worker_bee and I were watching a TV show last night on which paramedics were treating a small boy for an allergic reaction to peanuts. We know many kids at our sons school that have allergic reactions to peanuts and know that it is best to ask before serving stuff or making cookies, etc. for friends. But we were talking about the show and neither of us could recall any of our friends or friends of friends that had an allergy to peanuts when we were at school (elementary thru high school).

We adore our cat and we're good parents to her. Do we have to give her up?

Our former roommate had a cat, which he was babysitting for his ex. He lived with us for 6 months and barely acknowledged this wonderful, personable animal - they hadn't bothered to give her a name - and my girlfriend and I became close with her and kept her for 2 months after the roommate moved out. Now he has reappeared and wants to take her back to a lonely, neglected existence. We want to say no. How can we do this?

Like many other geeks here, I grew up reading sci-fi and fantasy. But I gradually got tired of it, because so much of it was poorly written or antithetical to my tastes. But I still yearn for other worlds at times, so I'd be interested in recommendations. [more inside.]
