Dealing with loss in a nontraditional relationship

My boyfriend's best friend just died over the weekend. He is inconsolable. I know I can't make it better, but how can I make it suck less? To complicate matters, this is not a "normal" situation, and we're not a "normal" couple. MeFites familiar with BDSM culture and psychology encouraged to reply, particularly those familiar with roleplaying/puppy play. Lengthy details inside; probably NSFW (concept, not content).

Compatibility Testing while Traveling

I need to preview websites in various browsers on various platforms, all from Windows machines - while on the road. If I remember correctly, there's an online service that does this preview for you. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Spanish TV?...Help me get past telenovelas y Sabado Gigante

I want to watch some Spanish-language TV shows, and I want to get past telenovelas and things like sabado gigante (no offense!). I have Directv and a few channels such as Univision and Telemundo. (I could add the ParaTodos package if you can show me the light on some cool programming). I'm in the Denver area so I have access to several terrestial spanish language channels as well. I'm not interested in dubbed stuff from English, so Discovery Channel Espanol type stuff is out.

What else is in this invisible backpack?

I'm a straight, white, upper middle class male. I'm aware that this automatically means I generally have an easier time than people with a different sexuality/race/class/gender. That said, I'm probably unaware of what these benefits are. What does this 'privileged' status do for me that I don't even notice?

Take my arm, my love

Take my arm, my love. Don't write a check from a joint bank account. Hide all the photographs in your home and office which would identify you as a couple. Take off your wedding rings. Touch each other, and talk to each other, in public, in ways that could only be interpreted as you being "friends." The quality of luxury without the price or appearance

I used to get the cheapest liquid soap for washing hands I could find, but recently, I got the "shea butter" soap for $3 and found that the increased quality more than makes up for the increased cost. The question is: What else can I spend a little more on to get much more quality? (Fluffy towels, sheets, maybe?) Are there websites that review this?

Cat Power?

Every time I've ever dined at a sushi restaurant there's been a statue of a cat by the cash register. It's always the same pose, with one paw raised in the air in a kind of "cat power" salute. What are these called and what do they signify?

"Of course I don’t like Hitler but…"

It is an interesting and somewhat macabre parlor game to play at a large gathering of one’s acquaintances: to speculate who in a showdown would go Nazi.... Mr. B has risen beyond his real abilities.... His code is not his own; it is that of his class–no worse, no better, He fits easily into whatever pattern is successful. That is his sole measure of value–success. Nazism as a minority movement would not attract him. As a movement likely to attain power, it would.... Mr. G is a very intellectual young man who was an infant prodigy.... Mr. G will never be a Nazi,... [h]e will certainly be able, however, fully to explain and apologize for Nazism if it ever comes along.

How to deal with loss of loved one.

Please suggest resources for dealing with the loss of a loved one – how to cope with grief. When you moved to the area just before it happened, you’re now all alone, and don’t have friends established, or anyone to talk to - it’s hard to cope with the enormous bills, the life change and deep emptiness. You go to work and pretend all is fine, but it’s not.

U.S. County Courthouses

In the United States, most counties conduct local legal business in a centrally-located courthouse, which tends to be located in the county seat. Here is a flickr photo set of nearly all the county courthouses in the United States. From the [oldest] to the [most densly populated] to the [most populous], from the [ugly] to the [ornate], county courthouses present a remarkable variety of architectural styles. In some ways, these buildings seem to be the equivalent of European cathedrals -- they often represent the local community's largest and most expensive building, and they're designed with that in mind. Given our remarkable capacity for observer list keeping, I wonder why more people aren't courthouse spotters.

Talking to the dying

A good friend just received a brain cancer diagnosis with an estimated one year survival time. She wants to talk about death and time. She thinks I have something to teach or tell her worth hearing. I'd like to be helpful, but have no confidence in my ability to say or do anything meaningful. What I've said so far she appreciates. What can I read that might help me frame discussions. I don't need pop psychology stuff, or advice dealing with the health care system or funeral arrangements. I like the idea of Zen notions of letting go but am too ignorant to know what to say. Advice, experience, suggestions for gathering information please.

Where do they all belong?

"We all leave something behind, but it looked like Olive had left nothing." Olive Archer passed away after five years in a care home, five years that passed without a visitor. Concerned that Olive was an Eleanor Rigby the minister prepared for her service by making an appeal to the public to find if anyone remembered Olive. Friends were found. Sadly, she is not alone. Maybe she needed SagaZone.

Help the Old People Blog

I gifted my family a Wordpress blog (it's all up and designed and everything). I want a virtual center for our family that now spans the globe and can't get together often. However, how can I get the older coots to not only understand WHAT a blog is but how to use it. They use the interwebs. But only to look up the goofy stuff old people like - like when Murder She Wrote is on. Or to hate on George Bush. But not so much to interact. More inside.

early (1950s, earlier?) examples of R-Rated content in films?

Seeing some minor nudity in a 1950s film made me curious. What were some early examples of 'R-Rated' type material in films? I feel like non-Hollywood cinema makes this too easy, so what of naughty bits and foul language in American films? I know about 'Convention City.' Is there anything else Pre-Code that is anachronistically R-Rated for the time?

A sad coming-out story

I'm dealing with the fallout from coming out to my deeply religious immediate family. For years, I had prepared for their tears, their anger, their remonstrances, their appeals to the Bible, and all of those have come. What I hadn't prepared for was how disappointed I would be, and how fundamental and lonely that disappointment would be. Help?

How do you say "quiet please!!" in dog?

One of my dogs won't shut up. He was fairly quiet when we adopted him about 8 months ago after prior owners surrendered him, but several months of apartment living have encouraged him to bark every time someone walks outside, above, near, in, or around our apartment. He has such a high pitched, loud, piercingly painful bark, that I can't believe our neighbors haven't shot him, had him taken away, or even complained to us. Sometimes I can hear him barking from almost a block away, but I DON'T have reason to suspect he sits and barks all day when home alone.

St. Rita's Owners found not guilty in Katrina Nursing home deaths

In God we doubt

In God we doubt.
This is not an intellectual game. Even if we know what is true – and we don’t – you cannot reduce life to a set of provable realities. Humanity is too complex for that. In the end, it comes down to whether the world would be a better place without religion; and that is a matter of judgment, not certainty.

The Boys of Boise

In 1955, at least twelve men in Boise, Idaho were arrested for "infamous crimes against nature.". In the resulting dragnet, the vice president of the Idaho First National Bank was sentenced to seven years in prison, while national magazines fomented a McCarthyite Lavender Scare with headlines such as Male Pervert Ring Seduces 1,000 Boys. This dark chapter in Idaho gay history was documented in both John Gerassi's 1966 book, The Boys of Boise and the recent film, The Fall of '55, by documentarian Seth Randal, but neither Gerassi nor Randal could identify The Queen, a closeted but politically connected homosexual who allegedly used his massive clout to stop the witch hunt.
