This is stressing me in.

What is the best way for me to find an apartment in Lyon, with a kitchen, for 10 months to a year? I'm a Canadian in Toronto with a French Visa good for a year.

Selling furniture in France....

Selling-Furniture-in-France: Any suggestions for websites to post to to sell furniture in France (specifically in Lyon)? Craiglist, for instance, seems to have a rather small following in this town. Any other thoughts/secrets to selling stuff in France are appreciated....

May, 1968 - Paris. I would like to learn about it.

May, 1968 - Paris I've scoured the Wikipedia entry (very helpful), gone over a few articles and collections of varying quality (not bad), and I've seen "The Dreamers" (a fiction film that touches on it)... Now, what non-fiction media (book, article, film, photographic collection, etc.) should I consume to have a better understanding of the Parisian Students'/General strike of May, 1968? I'd like to start with the most general, canonical retellings, and then work towards the specific. [English Language or very good translation preferred]

Help with "pay what you can" Concept

I am researching the growing occurence of pay-what-you-can, or pay-what-you-think-the-meal-was-worth restaurants. There are several operating both domestically and internationally, as explained here. In light of the Radiohead giveaway, the concept has been getting increasing, positive press.

Atheism as taboo in fiction?

Book-filter: Nabokov commented on Lolita that there were only three taboos in American publishing: incest, interracial marriage and "the total atheist who lives a happy and useful life, and dies in his sleep at the age of 106." Did Nabokov(or anyone else for that matter), ever write a notable book about this latter taboo?

Advice for westbound trans-siberian trip (from Beijing) in April/ May?

I am trying to plan a 4 week trip back westbound on the Trans Siberian railway. I'm planning to travel through China via Shanghai from Osaka and then take the trans Siberian from Beijing. I'd love some advice on where I should stop over (I'm thinking maybe Mongolia, Irkutsk, Moscow and a stop in Eastern Europe) and what I should try and see and do in these places on my way back to London. Also, I'm on a budget of about $2000 is this enough?. I am arranging it all myself so any general advice/ experience would be very much appreciated.

How do I move a big tv set down two flights of stairs? Help me use brains rather than brawn. The 32" TV weighs 80 lbs. That by itself is challenging but what makes things really tough is that it's 23"x27"x31" and i can't get a grip around it.

Why did my nearsightedness mysteriously disappear for a few minutes?

I am very nearsighted with astigmatism in one eye. I don't know my prescription offhand, but I can't read the alarm clock display less than two feet from my pillow. So I was startled recently, while in the shower, to realize that I could see clearly! I could read the print on the shampoo bottle a few feet away. I thought at first I had forgotten to remove my contact lenses, but I had not. Sadly my eyes returned to normal after a few minutes. Has this happened to any other myopic MeFites? Can you explain why it happened?

What's a 6month adventure that will pay for itself?

I would like to quit my job and go on a self-sustaining adventure. By self-sustaining, I mean that it would mostly pay for itself, cost very little, or both. I have money saved, but I will need it as a buffer when I return to the real world and look for a job again. For argument's sake, let's say I can put $1500 toward this adventure. My time frame is 2 months to a year. I'm open to anything from being a frieght train hobo to volunteering in a far-away country to flying to Sweden and finding a job washing dishes.

Fairytales for grownups

I loved fairy tales as a child, and now that I am (nominally) a grownup, I love the "retellings" of fairytales — the fleshed-out versions which, for example, feature actual character development instead of lines like "she was as beautiful as she was good". I love Robin McKinley's retellings of "Donkeyskin", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Beauty and the Beast" (which she did twice for good measure), and Gregory Maguire's surprisingly political Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. What other good grown-up fairytales are out there?
