Looking for novel-esque non-fiction books.

I love Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City. It's a non-fiction book about Chicago in 1893 which reads much like a novel. I'd like to read other books written in the same novel-esque style about some other cities or historic events. Know of any novel-like non-fiction reads?

Recommend me some good post-apocalyptic movies and books

I have just found out I'm a big fan of post apocalyptic fiction books. Somehow I like the idea of an individual or small group of survivors almost alone in the world trying to find out what the hell happened to the planet and fighting for their survival. What are some good books and movies the hive mind can recommend?

Teach me where to fish...

I've had what I think is a decent idea for a website. Rather than asking someone to "punch it up" in their "spare time" I'd like to learn to do it myself. I know a bit about html and took a turbo pascal class 11 years ago. Since then it's been all humanities, social science, and law. What do I need to learn and what, in your experience, are the best books/web sites to learn from?

Best book for a beginner to learn C?

Best book for a beginner to learn C? I've never learned a programming language, but I'm hoping to learn C over the summer. My friend, a computer science student, is going to teach me as he learns it. We would like a textbook or reference book or work book of some kind. What would be a good choice?

What's a really good book on Ruby.

If my favourite reference on C++ is The C++ Programming Language by Stroustrup, what would be my favourite book on Ruby. (And my favourite book on Python.)

A book about Indochina, to make my mother happy.

My mom wants a book on French Indochina, and I'd like to find a good one for her. Preferably non-fiction, but good fiction with some insight into history and culture would work, too. The exact historical time range is flexible, but she's mostly interested in the area pre-Vietnam War.

The joys of a well-stocked desk

WhiteCollarFilter: For the very first time, I now have a desk (and office!) to myself at work. What handy, practical, useful, or fun things should I keep at hand? I'm not really seeking desk toys and the like so much as the kind of creative, thrifty, perhaps unexpected objects, tools, and supplies you've found useful over the years.
