What are the awesome things at this awesome location?

TorontoFilter: I've just moved to an apartment on Queen, just west of Spadina. I'll be here for two months - until the end of June - and I'm really excited. What should I do, where should I eat and drink, to make the most of this neighbourhood?

Toronto vs. Vancouver: What do you have to offer for everyday life?

What are the things and places that make living in Vancouver and Toronto fantastic for day-to-day life? Or, to put it another way, what are the things and places that you would miss if you moved away?

GiveWell, or Give 'em Hell?

Is This Transparency? OP with very slim, one-year posting history asks a question about finding a good charity in AskMe, just prior to year-end tax-decision time. Newly registered responder posts a newly formed charity-aggregator/evaluator organization, without mentioning that he is, apparently, one of the two founders. Self-promotional setup leading to self-link? Or am I being too cynical?

Boards of Canada - Music Videos

"If the emergence of techno and the proliferation of its related genres thrust DJs and producers into the spotlight, it also spawned artists who, like Kraftwerk before them, chose to remain anonymous and distant. The Scottish duo Boards of Canada (Marcus Eoin and Michael Sandison) is a case in point, an even more enigmatic presence on the UK's electronic music landscape than Aphex Twin and Autechre. Eoin and Sandison have consistently minimized their role in the commercial side of music-making and have avoided its attendant lifestyle: They've shunned city life for the rural seclusion of their Hexagon Sun studio and its local collective of artists. They claim to record primarily for themselves and their friends. They have reportedly amassed an enormous archive of unreleased music dating back to the early '80s (numerous apocryphal BoC tracks make the rounds). They seldom give interviews or perform live."

I like Sigur Ros. What modernist composers should I listen to?

What modernist classical music should I listen to? I am a big fan of Sigur Ros, especially Takk and (), and I'd like to listen to something similar. I also like Amnesiac by Radiohead quite a bit.

Legal information online

The Law Library of Congress’s Guide to Online Law includes legal information from over a hundred different countries and all fifty states. The Legal Information Institute has guides to 130 different areas of law. The Armed Forces Legal Assistance site is also a great resource for basic legal information, aimed at service members, but often generally helpful, on topics including consumer law, family law and trusts and estates. Your State’s Bar Association may also offer information specific to your jurisdiction.

What kind of tofu am I describing, and how do I make it?

What kind of dofu (tofu) did I have at a restaurant (made at our table), and how do I make it at home? Despite their claim, I don't think it was actually yose dofu.

How to be a good and sane professor in a crazy research world

I am a new tenure track professor (research uni) in the US. I just finished my first year and feel barely competent in a lot of areas -- ok but not good teaching evals, 3-6 weeks late in paper "deadlines", so many last minute "preparations" for classes or meetings, no good ideas for future research. I need some help figuring out how to better play the game, or to be happier with just getting by. Fellow academics (or others in similar professions), to the bat phone!

How to plan a daily schedule for a dissertation?

I need a daily work schedule to get me through a PhD. I am really bad at managing large amounts of unstructured time. I'm trying to draw up a daily schedule which factors in all the different things I need to do - writing, reading, library, sorting out notes etc. It should be easy, but I'm struggling - any tips, examples?

What are some good furniture stores in Toronto?

What are some good furniture stores in Toronto? My taste leans towards modern furniture (but not too modern), I really like Room & Board Furniture, as well as Design Within Reach (although it is a little pricey for me).

2 hours now, 5 minute salads later?

SaladFilter: Help me find stuff I can prepare ahead of time, preferably won't spoil (/will survive freezing), and I can simply dump on top of mixed greens and create a delicious salad!

Why, this isn't an input/output problem at all

Why aren't I losing weight? I'm doing everything right (aren't I?). Extensive explanation of weight-loss methods inside, so this is a doozy.

How to move an existing iTunes library to external drive for use by multiple computers?

I just received my new Airport Extreme. I'm eager to make use of its ability to connect to a USB drive. I'd like to transfer most of my data — songs, movies, and TV shows, in particular — to this drive, and then use it as a central repository for most of my Macs. But these computers already have existing iTunes libraries. What's the easiest way to make this transition? What's the best way?

Where can a girl go to get her head clear for free in this country?

My girlfriend wants somewhere to, in her words, "detox" in the USA. But it's not drug or booze related. She wants somewhere go, chill, clear her head, be quiet for a while and concentrate on starting her life again. And she wants to do it for free. Any ideas?

I like to watch.

Got some free time over the New Year's long weekend? Well, here's every episode (or damn near it) of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Boondocks, Clone High, Metalocalypse, Moral Orel, Robot Chicken, South Park (alt), Venture Brothers, Futurama. Or over here, there's all those and more. But wait my friends, there's more, yes, even more: for the same low price, I'll include the Ultimate Motherlode of Music Video (11,500 of them, or your money back!), alphabetized for your viewing pleasure. Just free up some bandwidth, and step inside ...

Academics: What's your filing system?

Academics: What's your filing system for academic papers? As I finish up my undergrad degree and enter grad school, I'm reading a lot of papers. Currently, they're just in a tall stack on my desk and in a folder in my Mac. I'm interested in hearing filing solutions -- both hard copy and electronic -- for academic papers.
