We had a similar situation in Canada a few years ago involving a woman named Belinda Stronach, a good-looking woman from a monied family who had nothing else going for her. She'd never even been able to finish university, and her career had consisted of holding a series of ill-defined jobs within her father's companies - it wasn't ever clear exactly what she had done. When asked in an interview to name one important decision she had made as director of the Magna Corporation she was unable to do... [more]

The information that her daughter Bristol is the actual mother of Trig, the "fifth child" of Palin is getting some legs.
I really don't like this story. It, like the fact that she was once in a beauty pagent, has nothing to do with her policies. It's a mean, much-raking rumour.

roll truck roll, I just tell it like it is.
For all the moaning about copyright law, nobody seems to want to face the fact that it is unlikely anyone is going to get huge traction in a lawsuit. The statutes have been interpreted over decades and with each new lawsuit the case law really doesn't carve out great exceptions that the copyfight crowd hopes for. Time and time again it comes out in favor of the rights owners. I'm not saying that many of the arguments don't... [more]

Do you think it's likely that the unfair judging in Olympic gymnastics could be mafia related?
Oh, please. What I've noticed is that the US commentators attitude has been: if a US gymnast does well, it's obviously because of how awesome and perfect their routine was, but if gymnasts from other countries do well (in particular, China) it's obviously due to a bias. In the case you mention, Chung Fai's first vault was simply amazing and while her second vault's landing was rather bad, she lost points both from her execution score and her difficulty score for that. It might reflect some bias... [more]

Aw, and I'm turning 21 in three months!
You know, my dear old Dad got me drunk for the first time when I was, oh, about thirteen. It was at a New Year's Party, and we walked home together singing. Around the house, I could have a glass of wine or a beer with meals (or indeed, just hanging watching a movie) from about the same age. I did a lot of partying in my last few years of school, mainly with the youth theatre group I was part of. I had a great time, but I knew my limits and knew what not to mix, and when to stop, because I'd... [more]

Unhappy Birthday
You invited 100 friends... If you're expecting them to treat you the same as you treat them you should be going to, on average, 2 birthday parties a week. Do you? If not, adjust expectations accordingly. If so, then yeah, your birthday does suck and so do your friends. You should get rid of most of them and concentrate on the ones that reciprocate. In fact you should do that anyway.

Can we start one big apology thread and let everyone grovel in one spot if these apologies must be seen by all? Serious request. Because it's cool that people want to own up to their asshaberdashery, but all the threads for this are getting as tired as the "can't we all be nice?" threads. They're even starting to look more like a ploy for attention than a genuine apology. Wouldn't it be more genuine to send an email to the people you know you've offended instead of grandstanding? "All persons are created equal." Please explain that agreement in secular terms.
You've already edited it once, so I'll take a stab at the requested additional edit. "All persons are created equal." What do I win?! I don't need another right to vote, since I got one of those in 1920. Because the wording is actually "all men are created equal," although that meant white men who owned land at the time.
