I will be starting graduate school in the fall (thanks for the great advice on my previous question!), and going from a quite comfortable salary to a typical grad student's pay. Obviously, in order to keep my budget balanced I will have to cut back considerably on eating out and other costly entertainments. How can I maintain some kind of social life without going broke, and without offending my friends?

I tend to get very excited about lots of different projects and overcommit myself. I can be happily insanely busy for a while, but then I get overwhelmed, freak out and flake out. I don't want to do this anymore. How can I find balance and learn to work sustainably?

Chronotron is a Flash game in the same vein as the earlier
Cursor*10, which was deliberately triple-posted. (Sadly, the mods didn't see the humor value....) This is a very clever game mechanic, in which you cooperate with
yourself to try to solve puzzles. Lots of fun.
(I also found it slightly depressing to realize just how predictable I am.) [via]

What kind of conflict resolution do you use in your relationship?
There are it seems to me at least two types:
1. rules that you agree on as a couple to use during a conflict so as to address the conflict but also resolve it constructively
2. rules/approaches that you use unilaterally to approach a conflict

Rutgers professor of philosophy Jerry Fodor
created a bit of a stir last October when he wrote an article for the London Review of Books arguing that natural selection may not be such a great theory after all, and that a "major revision of evolutionary theory... is in the offing." Not many fellow
philosophers and academics agree, it seems. Fodor responds to his critics
here and
here. Six months later, it's still not entirely clear whether his argument is, as Justin E.H. Smith
put it, "irresponsible and stupid or so subtle that none of his adversaries, defending a status quo interpretation of the theory of natural selection, have been able to get it yet."

Ways of Seeing, the BBC documentary written and hosted by novelist and art critic
John Berger, is back up on YouTube. (scroll down for direct links to all four half-hour episodes) "I actually find it rather disturbing that -- despite our claims to be a culture that's increasing freedom of choice all the time -- we haven't come up with anything quite as astute, subversive or beautiful as Ways of Seeing since. Not on the BBC, and not even -- especially not -- on the internet. Download it while you still can."

I'm a guy 5-6 years over the legal drinking age, I have been sober all this time.
Recently I started been a
social drinker. I don't want to get drunk or stoned. Just wanted to socialize with others.
Due to the fact that I have been sober for this long I'm clueless on what to order at a bar.
My current choices are
- Beer (Stuck with Budweiser)
- Fish Bowl=vodka+cranberry juice (Introduced by a friend. It's ok but taste is not that great)
- Sparkling Wine (I like the taste)
Please suggest me some good cocktail
- That you like the taste
- Will not get me stoned
- Not girly (Is martini a girls drink?)
- Cost less than $6-$7 per drink (with relative to prices of small college town bars, not in NYC type of bars. I can understand that $5 drink in a college town will be $10 in NYC)
p.s.: Open to suggestions of good beers too.

I realized recently that I’m ashamed of myself at a deep fundamental level. When I fail at something big or small, I beat myself up emotionally more than I should and feel ashamed. I realize that this is not emotionally healthy, but I’m not really sure what I can do to change the dynamic.
