I'm leaving the country and scared witless; care to help with the particulars?

I'm twenty five, divorced, done with school, and finally able to get out and see the world. There's just one problem: logistics.

End of Summer Reading List

I think that I overdid it with the partying this month, and I feel a lot less intelligent. Also, I've been reading nothing but graphic novels and zines for a couple months. I was wondering if someone could recommend some books that I would enjoy and that would kickstart my brain again. A list of literature I'm into follows.

How do I grocery shop and cook?

I've been living on my own for about five years now, but I still cannot for the life of me understand grocery shopping. I've tried buying the staples, easy-to-cook meals, and even specific recipes. But I always end up ordering take out after a week.

Is it worth it to take singing lessons if I am a truly horrible singer?

All my life I've never felt comfortable singing and it sounds horrible. I don't know much about music but it seems like my voice goes flat and I have a hard time hitting high notes. My husband says it sounds like an alien trying to imitate the singing of earth people. I would like to learn how to be comfortable enough with my singing where I could sing karaoke and possibly Irish folk songs. Right now I am very very far from being able to sing in public. Is it possible to get better starting from being terrible or are singing lessons just for people who already can sing but want to get better?

Deck Chairs, the Titanic, and Me

What actually happens when one goes through credit counseling and/or debt consolidation? I'm in an ugly mess and I'm scared--everyone tells me it's not that bad, but that's only in comparison to horror stories. I see that it's not getting better anytime soon. Details inside--any practical advice is appreciated!

Best Freeware Games of '07

Many freeware games were released in 2007. How to seperate the crap from the good stuff? It can be a little hard admittedly but this thread on the Tigsource forums might help you. With around 30 categories (and a winner announced for each) ranging from 'Best Shooter' to 'Best Bosses,' there's probably something there to please just about anyone.

The most kissed girl in the world

In the 1890s, an unknown woman was found drowned in the Seine. Known as the l'Inconnue de la Seine, her death mask became a fixture in the homes of artists and writers, and her look the ideal of the age. Many have speculated on her identity, and she has inspired a long list of artistic works by Nabokov, Rilke, Man Ray, and others. She has since become the "most kissed girl in the world" thanks to the Norwegian toymaker that used her mask to create Resusci Anne, the standard CPR doll.

Country Blues Guitar Filter: Keys to the Highway: Some Country Blues Resources

CountryBluesGuitarFilter: Keys to the Highway: Some Country Blues Resources --although Weenie Juke Radio is now dead and gone, Weenie Campbell lives on, with forums, guitar lessons and linkage galore. Keys To The Highway lists lyrics and guitar keys and tunings for some notable artists. And the one for the Mississippi Sheiks is a link to the fine country blues music blog Done Gone, which has on its front page list of links just about every prewar, country blues and related site worth linking. As does Weenie Campbell. And at WeenieCampbell there are also some audio lessons in mp3 from the great guitarist and guitar teacher John Miller, these days a resident of my fair city.

Get your housing for nothing and your sweat for free

Want to live for free (sort of) in a historic home? Maryland, Delaware, and Massachusetts all have resident curatorship programs, in which you can live rent-free in a historic home, provided you spend your own time and money renovating it. Contact your state's historic preservation office to see if there's a program like this near you...

Myth-busters have the odds against them

Persistence of Myths Could Alter Public Policy Approach. "The conventional response to myths and urban legends is to counter bad information with accurate information. But the new psychological studies (PDFs) show that denials and clarifications, for all their intuitive appeal, can paradoxically contribute to the resiliency of popular myths." Pretend it's 1980. Let's also imagine that you are in Rome, and for whatever reason you have decided to go see this musical group called The Talking Heads.
At the concert, these are the songs that the band plays: Psycho Killer; Stay Hungry; Cities; I Zimbra; Drugs; Take Me to the River; Crosseyed and Painless; Life During Wartime; Houses in Motion; Born under Punches; and The Great Curve.

The Best and The Whitest

Late Night Shots is an "invitation-only" social networking site for elite GOP youth of Washington, DC that the late Steve Gilliard mockingly described as "the best and whitest." The Wonkette blog has devoted an entire section to the site that documents Late Night Shots' racism, date rape, anti-Islamic prejudice, and incest with second cousins, at least until Wonkette's editor started getting invited to their parties. The founder of Late Night Shots, Reed Landry, plans to take his networking site to other cities, but even though Wonkette has lost interest, the Washington City Paper has attracted scrutiny to the site again with a juicy new exposé.
