I've just signed up for a gym membership for the first time in my life... Due to metabolism, I'm not fat, but I'm still really out of shape... what should I start with?

After years of junk food, weight gain and not caring about my health, I'm trying to start living healthier.
Can anyone suggest some good supplements.
I really just want to have energy, be healthy and feel good.
Below are my stats and a few of my ailments.

As summer approaches, how about some nice suggestions for alternatives for cola/sodas? I want to save money, bottles, and empty calories.

I wake up with a dry mouth three to four times a night. This has been going on for quite a few years, but it would be nice to find a solution that works and to be able to sleep through the night more often.

"On Web sites touting the mind-blowing powers of
salvia divinorum, come-ons
to buy the hallucinogenic herb are accompanied by warnings: 'Time is running out! ... stock up while you still can.' That's because
salvia is being targeted by lawmakers concerned that the inexpensive and easy-to-obtain plant could become the next marijuana....Among those who believe the commotion over the drug is overblown is
Rick Doblin of the
Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, a nonprofit group that does research on psychedelic drugs and whose goal is to develop psychedelics and marijuana into prescription medication."
* "Salvia Divinorum is a small leafy green plant found primarily in the Mazateca region of Mexico. Sometimes called '
diviner's sage' the plant was traditionally used by indigenous peoples as a healing and divinatory aid due to its unique properties when chewed or smoked. When consumed in this manner, the active ingredient,
Salvinorin-A produces psychedelic effects in the body ranging from mild to extreme."

WhiteCollarFilter: For the very first time, I now have a desk (and office!) to myself at work. What handy, practical, useful, or fun things should I keep at hand? I'm not really seeking
desk toys and the like so much as the kind of creative, thrifty, perhaps unexpected objects, tools, and supplies you've found useful over the years.

Here's a little
quoting bookmarklet for Metafilter threads that I thought folks might find useful. Highlight a text snippit you'd like to quote and click the bookmarklet. It'll format the snippit as a quote and paste it into the comment box for you.

I've been living on my own for about five years now, but I still cannot for the life of me understand grocery shopping. I've tried buying the staples, easy-to-cook meals, and even specific recipes. But I always end up ordering take out after a week.

The
post from a couple of days ago is great, but really made me wonder where the MeFites make their magic.

Garfield minus Garfield: "Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life?"

Some new neighbors just moved into the flat above us. How do I reduce the noise of their constant stomping? Would asking them nicely render a solution?
And more importantly, is there some stomping disorder in modern psychology that I should know about? Because their flat is the same size and layout as ours, which isn't that big at all (you can walk across the hall to the door in about 10 steps) and I am genuinely baffled at how much stomping can indeed be done in such a capacity.

I've never given Bob Dylan a fair shake, and I'm starting to feel like I'm missing out. If there were one album (or two, if need be) that you consider to be an excellent primer or introduction to his music, what would it be?

How can I stop cell phone spam?
I have a cell phone with Verizon Wireless. I have voice and text messaging, but not data. I've been receiving text spam messages recently. These text messages appear to come from an e-mail address. My cell phone is on the national do not call registry.

A need a ringtones, but I hate ringtones: My iPhone's built-in ringtones aren't very good, so I'll have to buy one off iTunes. The problem is that I want something I can use in a business setting, and that is discrete, pleasant, and loud enough to hear. Can you suggest a song I should buy as a ringtone?

What podcasts will make me more intelligent just by listening to them? I enjoy the BBC's "In Our Time", which features serious discussion of historical events and people by academics working in the field, and also quirky, thought-provoking programs like WNYC's "Radio Lab" and "This American Life". I'm not so keen on some of the podcasts I typically get from newspapers that gloss over the surface of a subject with little analysis. What other highbrow podcasts are made by people who really know their shit?

Please recommend some canonical books (or even e-books) to learn networking in general (on par with a CS major), up to an 'intermediate' level. Including stuff on wireless networking and security concerns.
