I'm in college. I'd like to be trained to do editing and layout for a living. How do I proceed? Do you know anything about Simon Fraser's Editing program?

No pain, no gain, they say, and when it comes to real pain, the
inverse is true as well.
"
We
now have research indicating there's a memory of chronic pain,"
said Dr. Doris K. Cope, director of chronic and cancer pain for the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. It changes the genic code
sometimes, it changes the biochemistry, and it causes new proteins to
be formed." Or in other words, the more pain you have, the more pain you have. (
More on this.) It's no wonder, then, that more money is spent on pain relief than any other medical problem, and that there has been so much
pain research and so many
clinical trials revealing such painful facts as
redheads feel more pain,
men feel less pain, and that there's a
genetic difference between tough guys and wimps. (Much more pain inside.)

Neuroeconomics:
"Eventually it could help economists design
incentives that gently guide people toward making decisions that are in their long-term best interests in everything from labor negotiations to diets to 401(k) plans." Note the ambiguous use of the pronoun "their"--are we talking about the long-term interests of people in general or of economists?

Neurogenesis
Neurogenesis, the birth of new brain cells, was something we were all taught was impossible after a certain point. Professor Elizabeth Gould, doctor of psychology at Princeton, has claimed that it happens all the time. (
more) Now, she and her team at Princeton are saying not only is our brain always changing,
stress and environment directly affect brain development.

Mind Games.
"She speaks about her situation calmly, occasionally laughing at her own predicament and her struggle with what she originally thought was mental illness....Like Girard, Naylor describes what she calls "street theater" -- incidents that might be dismissed by others as coincidental, but which Naylor believes were set up. She noticed suspicious cars driving by her isolated vacation home. On an airplane, fellow passengers mimicked her every movement -- like mimes on a street."

When Yahoo Pipes first came out, there was some muttering about how this would be handy for creating a feed for an individual author on a multi-author blog w/o feeds by author? But I can't seem to find anyone who's done it, or successfully do so myself. Any Pipes gurus on AskMe?

More and more authors are turning to podcasting to find their audiences after being rejected by traditional book publishers,
it seems. Interested in hearing some of their stories for free (or if you're feeling generous, a suggested donation of $9.99)? Check out
PodioBooks, where there's a tonne of free literature just waiting to be downloaded to your iPod.

I was on Effexor for about a year to treat my depression, during which time (for the first time in 7+ years) my weight training came screeching to an abrupt halt.
(My energy level just wasn't there anymore, nor was I able to focus enough to be able to have a satisfying workout.)

The
premise of Marvel Comic's
Civil War storyline is that after a hero-related disaster, the government decides to force all superheroes to register, causing a split in the hero community. While heroes debate and decide which side to join, fans
debate whether or not the cross-over series is actually any good. Clearly,
Christopher Bird falls squarely on one side and has attempted to "improve" the story by starting a project to edit the dialogue of the series.

Zelda and the Golden Ratio.
A fascinating examination of the music from Nintendo's Zelda games, and the recurring appearances of 0.618, the bisection point on a line at which the relationship of the shorter segment to the longer one is the same as that of the longer section to the whole line.

What are your favorite book jacket or cover designs? What do you look for when you judge a book by its cover? I'm doing a design favor for a friend and need some inspiration. It's a word-heavy, non-fiction book targeted at the more brainy types. Any classic, timeless cover that makes you caress its spine every time you see the volume?

I am looking for a writer or thinker (to cite in a paper) who said something good about "There are things that every educated person should know." I know that this is a popular idea, so I'm most focused on enlightenment and later thinkers. It doesn't have to be the first person to argue for some set of competencies / knowledge, and it is not terribly important exactly what's in the set (but if you know, or if there's a quote, please include it). Any ideas?

A doctor recently told my husband that he needs to change his eating habits, she specifically said that he has to stop eating so much processed food. He is going to make the change but wants more information about why processed food is bad. I need help finding an article or website about processed food that can convince him to stop eating it.

Can I replace my lousy laptop battery with a better one?
I just bought an Acer Aspire 3000 series laptop and didn't realize how terrible the battery-life was until I got it home. The battery only lasts about an hour. Is there an aftermarket battery I can swap my battery for that lasts longer?

I have a hard time staying organized at work. My problem isn't working on something, it's staying aware of the many projects and tasks that I have to complete, prioritizing, and staying on top of a project (and letting clients know that I'm on top of it, next step, etc.) There are multitudes of tools out there, and I have access to many of them.
What I'd like to know is what methods have you found that work for you with regards to your daily organization at work? Notebook, spreadsheet, Outlook, etc?

I am looking for a resource or advice on organizing files and folders on a shared hard drive. I am faced with 12 GB of files that need to be reorganized - many files and folders are out-of-date, irrelevant, or obsolete, and many were created by people who no longer work at my company for projects that are no longer active. I'm hoping to hear about a strategy that helps me methodically organize all of this data, archiving what's no longer needed and coming up with an intuitive filing system for what is.

Fat: Insulation, padding, and storage. But are there any drawbacks to having low bodyfat that I might encounter? I'm lowering bodyfat - currently in the realm of fitness but perhaps going to touch on the realm of vanity. There seem to be no drawbacks currently, any exceptions? How much would the benefit be and how much fat involved? Are there optimum amounts (such as a point beyond which increased fat doesn't increase how long you could survive without food)? To what extent (any?) could fat from previous rich eating help nutritionally balance an unbalanced diet later on? To what extent could it not?
