I just got a new job in Manhattan, and while I've visited several times, I understand I don't have a great grasp on what it's like to
live there. Yet. (And of course, may end up living in another borough after a certain period of time.) Can you NYC MeFites give a Virginian some assimilation advice?

I'm courting a woman and we're not quite at the "come back to my place" stage yet, so I'm looking for what I call a "couch bar" in lower Manhattan-- where she and I can sit side by side, talk without shouting over music or crowd noise, and maybe steal a few kisses this Thursday night.

I am looking for some good hiking trails near NYC that are easily accessible via public transportation that aren't too long (over 6 miles total) or too steep (no Breakneck Ridge for me yet, thanks). I am also looking for a good hiking club to join in NYC.

I'm smart, attractive, have interests and passions, am often told I'm easy/comfortable to be around, am a good listener (heh, irony), etc. So why am I alone? Why can't I talk to people at will (beyond the rare times of random fluke I've yet to unravel the formula to) and leave a "not boring" impression on them?

What do you think of a person when you find out that they are foreigners. I'm specifically asking if you have noticed yourself acting differently to a person with an accent. Lengthy description follows.

Okay LA folk... time to tell me... what are your favorite things about/in Los Angeles? Especially your favorite hidden secret stuff that maybe only locals know of. Or super good deals or scenes that make you happy. Stuff that actually makes you stop for a second and think, "Man, I love this place" whether you want to or not.

I'm trying to figure out how to be less paranoid and obsessive and how to not replay past and future negative scenarios in my head constantly – eventually getting myself in trouble. Often, I go over negative things that I've overheard or have suspicions about, and negative recent occurrences (like getting fired recently or conversations that might have left me in a bad light in someone else’s view). I feel paranoid about anything I cannot control and have ever had problems with perhaps. I was recently fired from a job for generally being too confrontational with my boss about things I saw going wrong and things I was feeling paranoid about. The thing is -- the paranoia is somewhat justified, and I have a hard time believing that it's possible not to worry about stuff all the time. And now at my new job I feel that I’m at risk of the same behavior, feeling jaded already about my new work situation and worrying constantly about everything in my life (and about not having a life, and even about worrying too much itself!) – how can I feel more relaxed and just chill out?

How do I improve my blowjob technique? I do pretty well as it is but operate under the beliefs that a) it's something you can never be too good at and b) different people like different things, so I'd love to know new things to try. What do you like to do/like to have done to you?

I'm strugging to come to terms with the fact that I've read such a seemingly extraordinary number of books yet seem to remember so very little. The obvious answer is to apply oneself more rigidly, in future, to study; to take notes and review them, etc. However, I really don't feel like writing extensive plot summaries every time I read a book, neither does this help me deal with the very distressing realisation that I don't know as much as I should do.

Is $1350/mo reasonable rent for an apartment on
W 107th St. & Broadway (Upper West Side of Manhattan)? One bedroom, ground level, furnished, clean, utilities and cable included.
Can you tell me anything about the W 107th & Broadway area? Nice? Stuff to do? Safe?
