WFMU's Free Music Archive,
"an online digital library of music that will allow music fans, webcasters and podcasters to listen, download, and stream for free, with no restrictions, registration or fees. And it will all be legal." Still pre-launch, but there's already
quite a bit of music available on the site, including a
sampler CD.

The ancient web
is an online resource for students, teachers, and anyone interested in the cultures of the ancient world. With the Olympics fast approaching, here is an opportunity to learn more about the past 4500 years of
Chinese civilization. Or how the
Celtiberians would get drunk and eat raw meat before going to war. 24 ancient civilizations in all.

Did a 'dream team' of biblical scholars mislead millions?
[Chronicle of Higher Education] You may recall the curfuffle over the gnostic "Gospel of Judas"
(previously). The National Geographic's documentary premiere "attracted four million viewers, making it the second-highest-rated program in the channel's history, behind only a documentary on September 11. . . . However, it's a perfect example, critics argue, of what can happen when commercial considerations are allowed to ride roughshod over careful research. What's more, the controversy has strained friendships in this small community of religion scholars — causing some on both sides of the argument to feel, in a word, betrayed."

I'm heading off to college in a few months and I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the myriad of point-and-shoot cameras on the market.
I ran through some pictures (well, actually many pictures) on Flickr to try and get a feel for what I was looking for, but some pictures are naturally more appealing than others and the quality is affected by various factors, so I ruled that method out as an objective option.
I'm pretty sure more megapixels isn't always more quality and that there are other factors to account for, such as noise and shutter speed, but I'm at a loss at what really matters in a digital camera.
I hope I don't sound completely uninformed, but I've scoured previous topics and while they're very helpful, they're a little outdated. I would really appreciate recommendations on a compact/ultracompact camera that takes pretty pictures! I'm willing to spend up to 300, but hopefully no more than that :)
Thoughts? Suggestions? Jeers? :(

Has anyone ever visited Xilitla, Mexico? I am trying to plan a vacation specifically to enjoy Las Pozas, but I am finding the info on the web a bit scarce. I've pretty much read everything I could find on google including talking to the people at el Castillo, but I am looking for personal accounts and suggestions of how long to plan on staying, what else to do while I'm down there, and answers to questions I haven't thought to ask. I will be coming from Austin if that helps, and right now I am thinking about going round October/November. Thanks.

What is the best ebook library management software you mefites can recommend? I've googled about a bit and found some things that didn't look too promising or were not available on either of my platforms of choice. What I'd like is a total library management solution, similar to what iTunes or Amarok does for music. I have a Linux workstation as well as a Mac, so I would like suggestions for non-Windows tools only, unless the tool is so superior that it's worth the hassle getting it working with Wine or somesuch.

I need help people. I'm very interested in some research about antidepressants and about how they inhibit love and feelings. There are many articles about this online but I'm having trouble finding any corroborating evidence from other researchers (everything that I've found lists Dr. Helen Fisher of Rutgers as the source). I'm also interested in any research that disputes this, other than that from the drug companies themselves, obviously.

I'm looking for a great short educational cartoon about oil and petroleum that may or may not have been posted in the blue a long time ago, definitely elsewhere on the net. My extensive searching has uncovered nothing and someone else may simply remember the title. It was 50's cartoony, obviously biased in favor of the industry, but seemed scientifically accurate. Any clue?

How do I make an easy to use media server? I'd like a nice, pretty interface that'll allow me to play any files on the back-end without having to do work on the front-end. Can Windows Media Center be run over a VPN? Is there one that more properly showcases new movies or television shows?

I'm interested in getting an e-book reader. The only two readers that seem to have a following are the
Sony e-reader and the
Kindle. Problem is, I don't want to spend anywhere
near the price of those two. Is there anything you can recommend for a lot less money, say under $100 US?

A couple months ago, I sold my old Sony Trinitron and gave up TV. It's been fantastic and I haven't really looked back.
But I *have* been missing watching movies on a screen bigger than my 15” laptop. I've also always wanted a bigger monitor for my laptop, so I can juggle more projects at once.
So I'm starting to look around for a large LCD monitor or sizable HDTV to serve these needs. I've had a couple co-workers at previous jobs tell me they use an LCD TV as a monitor and they swear by it for cost savings and multi-functionality.

I've been trying to learn more and more about sites where I can view great old TV classics, documentaries, and movies. And also not necessarily that old. I don't like all the YouTube type of "watch my hamster jump onto my sister's back" crap. And I'm sick of what's available from Comcast (although I have NOT subscribed to their extended service to see HBO shows, which I like very much).
