Best ways to prepare slabs of chicken?

I've been trying to make chicken dishes that don't rely on the usual pasta or rice+sauce+chicken combination. I have not been successful. I'm looking for chicken recipes and techniques that rely less on pasta and rice, and more on imparting flavor to the chicken itself.

Help me find some economics reading material.

I'm going to be starting a Master's degree in economics in September and I've never taken an economics course in my life. My undergraduate degree was in pure mathematics. I've been given a few economics textbooks to help get me up to speed. I was wondering if anyone could suggest to me any light reading that would help introduce me to economics and more financially based mathematics. Thanks.

At what point do you cut your losses?

Stock question: I have two ETFs (BDJ and DCS) that have been declining all year but have really gone into the toilet lately. I've lost about 30% combined on both. Would it be best to just cut my losses and sell them now or actually buy more?

Photography trips in NYC area

I'm looking for ideas for interesting, off-the-beaten-path places to go and take photographs in New York or the surrounding areas. It would be good to take photographs that not absolutely identical to things you see in travel books, so no touristy or centrally located areas. Recent visits been to the abandoned buildings of Ellis Island, the recently-collapsed smallpox hospital on Roosevelt Island, Astroland, Vinegar Hill, and Washington Rock (in NJ). What are some other photo-worthy places?

Hong kong for cheap

What's the cheapest way to stay in Hong Kong? Assuming one is willing to brave all discomforts (within reason of course, no sleeping under the bridge), what is a cheap cheap way to stay for 10 days in Hong Kong, including accomodation and food?

"I have accomplished nothing and I am nothing."

[T]his pattern, grade for the sake of a grade, work for the sake of work, can be found everywhere. Ladies and gentlemen, the spirit of intellectual thought is lost. I speak today not to rant, complain or cause trouble, and certainly not to draw attention to myself. I have accomplished nothing and I am nothing. I know that. Rather, I was moved by the countless hours wasted in those halls. Today, you should focus on your child or loved one. This is meant to be a day of celebration, and if I’ve taken away from that, I’m sorry. But I know how highly this community values learning, and I urge you all to re-evaluate what it means to be educated.
- from a graduation speech by the valedictorian of Mainland Regional High School, Kareem Elnahal, critiquing his school's education process.

The principal's reaction? “My hope was they did not hear or understand what he was saying. ... He was belittling the diplomas of every one of those kids.”.

Is there a set-it-and-forget-it way to invest?

Tale of Two....or Three Cities

I am looking for books ( fiction or non-fiction ) about the adventures of city living. Give me tales of colorful characters in New York, dandys in London, and criminals in Tokyo. I want to read about restaurants, jazz clubs, gambling dens, eccentric shops, and seedy alleyways.

Do you know the nicest way to San Jose?

Will be driving from LA to San Jose. Starting lunchtimeish on a weekday near Century City. Would ideally like to take as much of State Route 1 as possible and happy to split up the drive with an overnight at a motel or something on the way. Need to be in San Jose lunchtime the next day. Doable? Sensible? Should I take the 5/101 and forget about the scenery? And what are the highlights I shouldn't miss?

Esoteric Facts

I am looking for examples of secret / esoteric information and facts that changed your perspective on the world or caused you to say 'Now that's interesting, I haven't heard that before!'. For example, this recent thread contained information about ADM that opened my eyes to the subtleties of the sugar markets. A simpler example of the type of knowledge I am looking for are the interesting things that grocery stores do to increase sales. Or the unsubstantiated claim that more people speak English in China that they do in America. I am looking for interesting tid-bits of knowledge that you might find in books like The Tipping Point and Freakanomics. Something your Oxford educated, weed-smoking Uncle might whip out during a random conversation at a cocktail party.

Travel jobs

I’m about to graduate from a small state university with a degree in political science. I’ve decided to spend a year or two traveling either at home (US) or abroad. I'm looking to do a lot of writing and photography and maybe make a book of it. It seems the only feasible option is to get a job traveling. The closest thing I’ve found so far is teaching English in Asia to graduate students like a friend of mine is doing. The pay is very low ($250/month, but most expenses paid) and I’d rather be moving around more. Any other ideas out there?

Chinese ethnicity and assimilation?

I know that there was quite a bit of immigration from China in the late 1800s. My question is, have the descendants of those immigrants ethnically assimilated into the rest of 'white' America, or have they retained their ethnic identity throughout the 20th century to today? Most Chinese-Americans that I have met are more recent immigrants, so I have no idea.

What's a 6month adventure that will pay for itself?

I would like to quit my job and go on a self-sustaining adventure. By self-sustaining, I mean that it would mostly pay for itself, cost very little, or both. I have money saved, but I will need it as a buffer when I return to the real world and look for a job again. For argument's sake, let's say I can put $1500 toward this adventure. My time frame is 2 months to a year. I'm open to anything from being a frieght train hobo to volunteering in a far-away country to flying to Sweden and finding a job washing dishes.
