What rituals do you have in your profession or job? A friend's son - who works in the construction industry - told me about "topping-out parties" once a building's top floor and roof structure have been completed. Now I'm curious about what other professions do. Not so interested in religious rituals though.

I'm running OS X Leopard on my beloved shiny Macbook and there's one thing that I find irritating. I love using F9, F10, F11 etc to bring up Exposé, Dashboard and the Desktop, but every now and again they suddenly stop functioning. It's normally when the computer's been on for a few days - I hit the keys and nothing happens. So I check in Keyboard Shortcuts of the System Prefs, and all the boxes in the "Dock, Exposé and Dashboard" are magically unticked. I can tick them again, and everything's fine and dandy for a few days. Alternatively, I can reboot and it's back to how it should be. (For a while...) Why is this happening, and how can I stop it?

A group of us at our company have volunteered to organize our summer event. Our office is in Chicago, and in the past we have done several things such as going to a cooking class together, sporting events, bars, bowling, cruise, etc. So now we want to do something even more fun and outrageous if possible! Any good ideas for a corporate event in Chicago?

Learning photography with the Nikon D50. While it is a great camera and I am not a camera/techno-phobe by any means, the amount of features and possibilities of this camera overwhelm me from time to time. I would like to learn about all the features and tricks and tips and subject shooting scenarios that would help me understand aperture, shutter-speed and other photography elements better. In a click-and-learn sort of a way, almost. Naturally, this means that I find the manual and the (quite excellent) Nikon phototutor not up to the mark.

A good friend just received a brain cancer diagnosis with an estimated one year survival time. She wants to talk about death and time. She thinks I have something to teach or tell her worth hearing. I'd like to be helpful, but have no confidence in my ability to say or do anything meaningful. What I've said so far she appreciates.
What can I read that might help me frame discussions. I don't need pop psychology stuff, or advice dealing with the health care system or funeral arrangements. I like the idea of Zen notions of letting go but am too ignorant to know what to say.
Advice, experience, suggestions for gathering information please.

I've lived in my apartment for almost two years, on a month - to - month lease signed when the previous tenant left. While I can't claim to have been the perfect tenant, I've certainly never done anything that can get me evicted.
Last month the building sold to a new owner, with whom I'd met and seemed friendly, but I've been wary of the situation nonetheless, never having much reason to trust landlords.
So, this morning, the other shoe dropped...

I've never invested before, but I'd like to start. An S&P 500 index fund seems to be a good, easy, long-term option for beginners.
