The lady & I want to watch some whales in Victoria BC around Memorial day. We'd like to avoid cookie-cutter-corporate hotels. We want a funky mid-price (think $100/night or so) place to stay. When we travel around Washington/Oregon, we like to stay at
McMenamins. Is there anything close to that in Victoria?

According to the recently published book
The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, the best Chinese restaurant outside China is
Zen Fine Chinese Cuisine, tucked away on the second floor of a mall along a section of Richmond, BC (a Vancouver suburb) that's known by the Chinese community as Eat Street.

I’ve discovered that typically, a farmer who grows the forbidden fruits and vegetables on corn acreage not only has to give up his subsidy for the year on that acreage, he is also penalized the market value of the illicit crop, and runs the risk that those acres will be permanently ineligible for any subsidies in the future. (The penalties apply only to fruits and vegetables — if the farmer decides to grow another commodity crop, or even nothing at all, there’s no problem.)
If you can't stop demand, curtail production.
One farmer's view on the power of commodity crops.

I have pretty much watched all of the videos on TED.com and I am looking for another source to waste time online - but at least feel smarter at the end.;) I am not looking so much for online classes/courses (MIT and other), but more "bit size" hour long or so talks/lectures. Thanks for your help!

Vancouver.filter: I'm in Vancouver for a week and was wondering if there are any neighbourhoods that have a concentration of shops that sell home accessories, linens and furnishings - much like the stretch of blocks along Toronto's King East, Queen West West and Queen East neighbourhoods.

Is it possible to make the type of frosting that comes in a can? I love that frosting, but I also love cooking from scratch. I do not like buttercream or thin glazes much. Is there a name for the type of frosting that you usually find in a can? Can it be approximated at home? What gives it its distinctive taste? Do you have a recipe?

is it possible to play region 1 DVDs on a region 2 macbook without changing the drive setting? I can play them using VLC player on my PC but the mac just ejects the disc if I don't change the drive setting to region 1. Is there any way around this or will I have to keep my old PC around to play all my American DVDs?

Few books have given me as much sheer joy as Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typographic Style". Tufte's "Visual Explanations" is also up there in terms of content and presentation. What other exceedingly well researched, written and designed non-fiction books would you recommend for somebody interested in Design, Architecture, Programming, Information Visualization, Maps, Math, Music and Science?

My dad drinks scotch and I've gotten him some single malt ones, which I prefer, and he didn't like them too much. I am looking to get him a great high-end scotch. He likes johnny walkers so I've gotten him a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue once and he liked that a lot. So I am hoping to get him something else that's similarly high quality. I am hoping to spend perhaps $75-$500 or so. Don't know much about scotch, esp. blended, so your suggestions would be appreciated.
