Do you enjoy classic 2D platformers? Then boy, are you in luck! The
indie game community is thriving, and a good majority of its games are exactly that. I've spent many hours playing these unique, beautiful, and often exceptional projects, and there's quite a few - more than I can count on my fingers! - that could stand toe-to-toe with the finest contemporary games. Inside is a list of some of the greatest indie platformers, based on community recommendations and my own experience. Enjoy!

Dixie Square Mall
, in the mostly-blighted "
inner ring" Chicago suburb of
Harvey, Illinois, opened in 1966. It suffered gradual decline, until it closed in 1978. A year later, film crews gave the mall a brief makeover and
Jake and Elwood Blues drove through the place. Then, nothing. For 20-plus years, the mall sat and decayed.
Renovation plans (even a planned
baseball stadium for the White Sox) were
popular over the
years, but never panned out. In 1993,
a rape and murder took place in the JC Penney's space.
From space, the mall looks beat up. From the ground, it
looks even worse. Human fascination with deserted space has borne a
number of websites and
spelunking trips (along with some
excellent then-and-now
comparisons), and a
documentary is apparently in the works. Finally, at long last,
there's renewed hope for the site. Previously seen
here and
here.

I'd like to spend a week or two of vacation in a kind of "intellectual retreat". Let me rephrase that and try to make it less pretentious - I want to get away from it all and read/write in peace. Please help me find a suitable place.

What rituals do you have in your profession or job? A friend's son - who works in the construction industry - told me about "topping-out parties" once a building's top floor and roof structure have been completed. Now I'm curious about what other professions do. Not so interested in religious rituals though.

Lately, the concept of "friends" seems to have become incredibly diluted by the casual use of the term by Facebook, MySpace et al. But in "the real world" what do you consider to be important when you are
making and becoming friends? Is it how long you've known someone? How frequently you meet up? What you have in common? Something more intangible?
Also, I'd love recommendations of any books looking at the psychology of how people become friends.

Is there a good reference site for festivals around the world? I'm going to be traveling and this would be a neat place to start planning where to be when.
I'd like to find a resource that has actual
festivals, not just holidays (like you wouldn't specifically come to the US for MLK Day but you would for the 4th of July).

Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki
Jiten, a DS lite "game," is apparently really useful for learning kanji. So much so that people in
this thread recommended it over dedicated electronic dictionaries. Any other DS software you'd consider that useful?

Solid Gold was a television show that ran from 1980 to 1988, on Saturdays, in the early evening, hosted by (among others) Dionne Warwick, Rick Dees, and Marilyn McCoo. It showcased snippets of the Top Ten popular songs of the week, accompanied and sometimes interpreted by the
Solid Gold Dancers. This post is about them.

Who's the Carver of today? That is, who do the kids in contemporary writing workshops emulate? Supposedly, in the 50's into the 60's it was Hemingway. From the 60's and 70's it was Donald Barthelme. The 80's and 90's was the reign of Carver. Has anyone taken over?

Astronaut: A Flickr-Generated Project
Around the time I was exploring the Flickr API, I was listening obsessively to a song by a musician friend of mine. I got the notion to import his song into Flash, mark specific keyframes in the song, and randomly pull images from Flickr whose tags matched his song lyrics.
I've found that sometimes, the image combinations end up being pretty amazing; other times, they end up being silly and totally subvert the song. It all depends, as each viewing should provides a new, randomized set of photos. But that, I think, is part of the fun. Hope you like it.
