ZomBay Critical Mass

AquaticNecromancyFilter: Combined, the cities of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley employ about 3500 uniformed police officers. Do they outnumber the army that could be raised by dark magic from the floor of the San Francisco Bay? Approximately how many entire sets of human skeletal remains are there in that body of water, considering disasters, shipwrecks, bridge jumpers, tidal movement of sediment, etc.?

How do I start running?

I am going to start running. I am! But I've also never made any attempt at serious athletic dedication in my life. What do I need to know, starting with stretches and moving towards routines. Pretend I am an alien. More inside.

Roasted chèvre, please

Mmmm... cheese. I went to a tapas restaurant the other day and one of the things we ordered was roasted chèvre — essentially a sticky warm blob of goat's milk cheese in a dish. The edges were brown, perhaps caramelized, and it tasted deliciously sweet. How do I make it? And do I need a butane torch to do it?

Where are good places to buy inexpensive office furniture?

I've already checked out officefurniture.com, IKEA, Office Maxand Staples. Can you recommend a place to get modern type office furniture, particularly desks for around $500 or less? I'm looking for either a corner desk or L-shaped.

I love risotto. I really do. But my recipe which is a chicken + spinach risotto is getting boring. I'd love to experiment a bit more.

My employer does not provide vision insurance. What should I do?

My employer does not provide vision insurance -and I wear glasses for nearsightedness. The way I see it, I have three options - 1) Use the Lenscrafters coupons in the Sunday paper, 2) Use my AAA member card for a discount at Lenscrafters, 3) Use the measly 20% vision discount I have available as a member of BlueShield, or 4) Sign up for independent vision coverage through a plan like VSP. Is anyone else in a similar boat? What do you use? What do you recommend and advise against using?

Do I eat the thorns or the fur?

What's wrong with my artichokes (or is it me)? First time I've bought artichokes. I cut them open according to the instructions on artichokes.org, and instead of tasty yellow artichoke hearts, I have thorny stuff and furry stuff. I tried with 2 other artichokes and they're the same.

Auto tagging MP3s based on a textfile

MP3 tagging: I have hundreds and hundreds of songs tagged with the title like this: Stairway_To_Heaven. In a Word file, fixing this is trivial, and I could save that to a txt file. Is there tagging software that will rename by pulling from a text file? Windows only, please.

Public libraries with Online Content

Public libraries with Online Content: Residents of Missouri can get a free account at the Kansas City Public Library that will let them access digital databases including the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps and downloadable audiobooks. Residents of the Empire State can get a digital library card at the New York Public Library to access a wealth of digital databases. (The rest of us can get a NYPL card for $100.) And the Boston Public Library will give digital access to most of the above, plus JSTOR and (sigh) the Early American Imprints collection of nearly everything printed in North America to 1820. Unfortunately you have to show up at a branch of the BPL and prove Massachusetts residence to get your card. Your turn--what other public libraries offer access to subscription online information databases?

I don't want to make this about me, but. . .

Goodbye everyone, Since there has been discussion regarding whether or not my posts to this community are relevant, I have decided to no longer post here. I've enjoyed my time here...meeting a lot of you, but I simply find this community's rules too restrictive, and since I write what I feel, without regard to content (Is it sexist? Is it parental? Is it political? Is it, God forbid, all three??), this community will only end up stifling my originality, and I have no intentions of letting myself be censored in this way. i hope you fall off your soap box someday and bust your ass. i'm out of here. i am not sad about it either.

Thief of Souls

Romaine Brooks (1874-1970), American expatriate artist known for her haunting portraiture and striking palette, suffered a childhood so dark that she entitled her (unpublished) memoir "No Pleasant Memories." She went on to become an important figure in early twentieth century art and earned the Legion d'honneur in 1920 for her contributions to France in World World I. A pivotal figure in the Paris lesbian salons, Brooks was the model for characters in novels by Radclyffe Hall, Compton Mackenzie and Djuna Barnes. Although said to be "fully herself only when alone," she had a fifty year relationship with Natalie Clifford Barney. Her art has enjoyed a reappreciation in recent years and her work has been featured in exhibitions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Berkeley Art Museum. Her life and work have been the subject of several books and have a startling contemporary resonance.
