Akhenaten and Akhetaten

Akhetaten (a.k.a. Amarna) was the city built by Pharaoh Akhenaten, famous for his monotheistic beliefs and his queen, Nefertiti and son, Tutankhamun. The Amarna Letters has translations of correspondence sent to the Akhenaten, but a trove of it was found at the Amarna site. During his reign a distinctive style of art rose to prominence, only to vanish after his death. The Boston MFA has 40 objects from the era in its collection. Perhaps the most famous of the cultural artifacts of Akhenaten is the Great Hymn to Aten (hieroglyphics, four different English translations: 1, 2, 3, 4). This poem was set to music by Philip Glass for his opera Akhnaten (information about the opera). Some see direct parallels between The Great Hymn to Aten and Psalm 104. Though it was billed as a new beginning, like many utopias, Amarna was no haven for the regular folk who lived there.

Steamed Rice with what?

Steamed Rice with what? I'd like to use my rice cooker more often. I'm looking for recipes that take five to ten minutes that I can add / pour over / serve next to my steamed rice. Bonus: What are some things I can add to the rice cooker as the rice is being cooked to make it a one pot meal?

I've got the opposite sleep problem!

Instead of not being able to get up in the mornings, I have a problem with waking up TOO early. Typically I go to sleep around midnight-1:00 am (it's when I start getting tired) but for the last 2 months or so I've been waking up anywhere between 5:00 am to 7ish, and my alarm doesn't go off until 8:15.

Hack My Baby

Give me your baby hacks! My wife and I are expecting our first child in November. What tips and tricks can you offer us to make our lives a lot easier? For example, a friend of mine swears that putting a crying baby in front of a mirror will cause it to stop. Another uses noise cancelling headphones to temper the noise from his shrieking child. I am looking for hacks on everything from diaper changing to stroller modifications. Make our lives easier as we enter into parenthood.

Shakespeare and philosophy

Martha Nussbaum reviews three recent books on Shakespeare and philosophy. The essay offers an excellent analysis of love in Antony and Cleopatra and Othello, and an excellent discussion of the interaction between philosophy and literature.

New soles for old Birkenstocks: worth it?

Does resoling Birkenstocks really work? If so, what is the best online company that resoles Birkenstock sandals? I love my Birks and they're still in great shape, except for the rubber sole, which is almost worn down to the cork. I'd like to save some money and get them resoled, but I can't find a local store that is an "authorized" Birkenstock repair shop. Have you had experience with a good repair shop that accepts mailed-in sandals? (Ideally, I'd like to find a nice balance of quality, price, and speed.) Most importantly, did your new soles stay attached to the cork footbed?

How can I search for cheap, last minute flights out of a particular city, but with no particular destination in mind?

I often find myself with an open weekend and an urge to fly to no place in particular, just to go exploring. Whether it's Sioux City, Billings, or Biloxi, I figure I can entertain myself anywhere for a weekend. Are there websites that allow you to search for cheap, last minute flights from a given origin, irrespective of destination? Most sites require you to enter a destination, which makes the whole process a lot more difficult.

learning to chill out

what has worked for you if you consider yourself overall an anxious person? i rarely suffer from any severe anxiety symptoms, panic symptoms or find that my anxiety is getting in the way of carrying out my daily activities, but rather it feels as if my general mood is of of rather high anxiety about a great many things and about nothing in particular, and has been so for years now.I come from a long line of worriers. i cant remember the last time i really relaxed in any kind of deep way. almost to the point where i cant even really remember how that felt, the world seems so colored with stress. I perhaps shouldn't even be using the term anxiety. by and large i do not meet any of the clinical criteria for this as a clinical definition maybe it really is the world we are in right now. i eat well, get plenty of rest and exercise, meditate. I take no medications. Drink a beer or glass of wine now and then. What has worked for you if you were once feeling like this?

I'm 23 and my boobs need to go.

I am 23 and I have the BRCA1 gene mutation. My mother had a double mastectomy in her 40s, because of precancerous cell growth, and both of my grandmothers have had breast cancer pre-menopause (both are fine.) I'm basically a ticking time bomb. I'm interested in hearing any stories from women under 30 -- or women that you know -- who have undergone a voluntary double mastectomy because of their family history and/or the gene mutation.

How to rebuild a life? Long....

Reconstructing myself - where to begin? Last night my wife of 22 years announced that she and I were finished as a married couple. Now, at the age of 53, I find myself alone. Presently, I am seeking the anonymity of a bunch of strangers because it doesn't seem hurt as much this way. A cross sectioning if you will. Besides, MetaFites are generally a younger bunch, and they may have a more optimistic perspective on this.

Help me find some swinging bachelorettes

Since I seem to be hurtling towards old maidhood, I’d like enjoy the ride as much as possible. It irritates me that single women are so often portrayed as sadsacks just marking time until they can get married, or as being eaten up with bitterness and neuroses because they never found a man. So, I’m looking for positive role models and inspiration. What examples of fabulous freewheeling women can you think of in fiction, movies and real life?
