I'm interested in reading more fun books, written in 1945 or earlier, which clearly set themselves in the time and place that they were written. Examples include Anne of Green Gables, Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers, Pride & Prejudice, and China to Me.

Looking at my rhubarb patch, it seems I'm going to be eating a lot of rhubarb this summer. Though my mother always had some in our garden, I don't think I've ever eaten rhubarb in any form but in rhubarb pie or rhubarb crisp. What's your favourite rhubarb recipe?

Labor of Love
: when a married couple wanted to start a family and the wife was unable to conceive or carry because of previous surgeries, her husband, who is transgendered and legally male, stopped taking his testosterone and was inseminated.

Ladies, have you ever dreamt of being
whisked away kidnapped by a dashing young Prince? Or being swept off your feet and losing your virginity to a dark and mysterious
stranger, who happens to be a Sheikh? Or how about being sold to an Arab aristocracy and living off the rest of your days in married
bliss. No? Then how about considering a Royal who is so
down-to-earth you won't meet anyone else quite like him? Much better than the alternative of marrying his
polar opposite, don't you think? Of course, you can always
try and keep it platonic if you wanted to. Welcome to the wonderful world of
Sheikhs and Desert Love, where all of your
fantasies can come true!

3 Hive
This is a great source for free, legal and cool mp3's. The folks at
3hive have put together a great collection of links to bands and the free mp3's they have available, including a short description/bio of each artist. New posts appear almost every day making this an excellent source for new music. Radio who needs it!

So,
good day, and welcome to the
Bob and
Doug McKenzie FPP.
How's it goin' eh? Like, I've got some
back bacon fryin' up on the Coleman, a dozen
donuts, a
two-four, and our topic today is stuff on the internet relating to
these two Canadian hoseheads. So, like, sit back, put a
toque on,
grab a beer, and enjoy!

A Year in Comics
I'm drawing a page of comics once a day for the rest of the year. Most of them so far are autobiographical—things that have happened to me on that particular day. They're somewhat crude, but the quality is guaranteed to improve. They're also viewable as
this Flickr set.
Comics are usually posted late in the day, because I don't manage my time well.

Nutrition filter: I am looking for unique ideas for making quick, easy, heathy, inexpensive dinners (in my case, for two) every night... or at least most nights. "Dinner Hacks" you might say. I feel like I've tried all the standard "solutions" already (for example, cooking a few big meals on the weekend and eating leftovers the rest of the week). There must be something else I can try.

A good friend just received a brain cancer diagnosis with an estimated one year survival time. She wants to talk about death and time. She thinks I have something to teach or tell her worth hearing. I'd like to be helpful, but have no confidence in my ability to say or do anything meaningful. What I've said so far she appreciates.
What can I read that might help me frame discussions. I don't need pop psychology stuff, or advice dealing with the health care system or funeral arrangements. I like the idea of Zen notions of letting go but am too ignorant to know what to say.
Advice, experience, suggestions for gathering information please.

If an English speaker wants to pretend to speak German
(and be completely obnoxious), he might say something like "Ach Bach Ze Hooverhoffen!" Or if he wanted to mock Spanish, he might say "Ahblo babblo ahblado el babblado!" Swedish might sound like "Hurky gurky pookety borkety!".
What sounds do non-English speakers use to mock English?

Wombs for rent:
"Anand's surrogate mothers, pioneers in the growing field of outsourced pregnancies, have given birth to roughly 40 babies. More than 50 women in this city are now pregnant with the children of couples from the United States, Taiwan, Britain and beyond. The women earn more than many would make in 15 years."

Claybourne was a unique and well produced radio drama set in New Zealand. It was science fiction, a thriller, a soap opera. It aired in 96 five minute episodes, but
died mid-storyline when it's creative team- like so many creative teams- couldn't get it together.

What's your all time favorite melodic guitar ballad?
Along the lines of "American Tune" by Paul Simon, I'm looking for emotional, touching, tunes I can play and sing along with on the guitar.
Emphasis on melodic and ballad, so "Vincent" by Don McLean would be a fit, but "More than Words" by Extreme wouldn't cut it for me, although it's a nice tune -- it's relatively lacking melody and relies a lot on gimmicky syncopated guitar work.

I need teaching resources about race: the biology of human "races"; why "race" is not biological but social; how racial categories have shifted over time and place; and related questions on teaching about race? This is as a supplement to reading
The Mismeasure of Man in a university "Critical Thinking" class. I need more science and verifiable cross-cultural examples to back up my "there are no biological races" claim.
