sales-ology for artists

I've been hanging out with my wife and her booth partner at a handmade goods market they sell at each week. It's pretty typical stuff, jewelry, crafts of various kinds. They also go to art festivals on occasion to sell their wares. We've been discussing sales techniques that could help them out. I'm wondering if there is such an animal: sales techniques for the artisan seller?

Why anon?

This anonymous question about swimming has picked my curiosity. The guidelines say that questions that 'don't appear to require anonymity' may not be approved. Is swimming a reason to be ashamed in some part of the world?

Slapping someone in the face a bit too much ...

While this guy does need the "slap in the face" back-to-reality technique he's getting, he doesn't need it to the extent he's getting, and the extent of name-calling is more likely to make him re-entrench in his behaviors than it is to assist in the change of attitude he's seeking. This comment is particularly unhelpful.

The Life and Death of Jesse Jubilee James, Featuring Harlan Ellison

In the grand tradition of Kaycee Nicole, Anthony Godby Johnson, and Kodee Kennings, Jesse James was a studly volunteer firefighter and 9/11 hero who A History of Violence screenwriter Josh Olson's friend Audrey fell in love with over the internet. He turned out to be not what he seemed. None other than Harlan Ellison himself took part in the intervention, and the ensuing confrontation of the perpetrator was recorded for posterity. Via.

Studies of the profiles of friendships

I have very few close friends. Most of them I have known for a few years (on the internet) but have never even met. I've never known how to have a superficial friend. I don't keep old friends. Has there been any research on how many close friends people usually have and keep during their lifetimes?

It's MetaFilter Survey Time!

As part of my final paper for a grad class, I wanted to ask the hivemind a few questions. It's just 20 quick questions about MetaFilter and AskMetaFilter, since those are the two most active parts of this community. I had to break it up into two parts since I'm a poor grad student and don't want to drop $20 for one survey: Part One Part Two It's also limited to the first 100 responses, but if even get close to 100 responses I'll be extremely happy. Thanks in advance!

Too much Sugar(CRM)!

Anyone know of a super simple, web based contact/history manager? A client is looking to upgrade from an old FileMaker database. It's an order-based business, but there are also consultations, interviews, etc. that happen with some customers. I'd like to find an app that I can export customers and order details from the website to and add a history function so that he can pull up a complete profile on the customer when he talks with them on the phone. Ideally, it would be an open source app that I can run on a local web server, but I suppose a hosted app would be fine as well. I've tried SugarCRM but it has way too much functionality for this type of business. Thanks, Hivemind!

Accepting credit card (paypal) payments offline?

My singing group sells CDs online using paypal (accepting credit cards) on our website. We also sell CDs at shows where we perform, and so far have been accepting only cash and check. We would like to accept credit cards in hopes of getting even more sales. I'm having trouble finding/understanding the information on the paypal website. Basically, can we get peoples' credit card info (the chick chunk slider?) and manually enter the credit card info into paypal at a later time? (I don't mind doing this manually, it's 50 transactions at the most.) We are straying away from the automatic machines because 1) we won't always have access to power and phone lines 2)we don't want to sign up with another merchant account. Thanks for the help!
