Help us avoid a traffic nightmare in NYC

NYC filter -- We are flying into JFK airport and then driving to New Haven CT at the worst possible times - we land at 4:00 pm Friday of Memorial Day and need to back at the airport no later than 6:30 Monday night. What is the best route to avoid total traffic jams?

Maximizing fellowship $ ethical?

Posting this ethics question on behalf for a friend: Friend has been offered two different fellowships and has to choose one. A is worth twice much as B. A good buddy is runner-up for A and does not have any other fellowship options. The buddy has offered to by my friend the difference if the friend takes B so the buddy can get A. So the end result is the friend would officially have fellowship B but cash from his buddy to give him the same as he would have gotten from A while buddy officially gets fellowship A with the net funding equal to B. Does this sound reasonable? ethical?

Do you know jokes which presuppose obscure knowledge?

I love esoteric jokes, the kind of humor which presupposes a lot of specialized knowledge. The more opaque the joke is, the better. However, by their very nature they're kinda hard to search for on Google, or at least I rarely hit upon the magic searchterms. So, do you know good sites with specialist jokes? If not, do you know any particularly obscure jokes?

Bay Area source for phonograph needles?

Can anyone recommend a store in the Silicon Valley/Bay Area that not only sells phonograph needles but can provide expert advice on which one to get? We want to replace the needle before digitizing the collection. We can figure out what would be compatible but need help figuring out the right price/quality trade-off. Also, if you have a specific brand to recommend that might be useful too.

Where to take a non-kid oriented family vacation next Christmas/New Year season (that is not a cruise)?

Need advice/lawyer but can't say why

I'm pretty sure the solution to my real problem is "find a lawyer" but how do I find a lawyer with the right expertise when I don't know any lawyers and don't want to go around telling people my problem? Advice from anyone familiar with this issue is also appreciated.

You're so smart you probably think this post is about you

"You're really smart!" Psychologist Carol Dweck says that praising a child for being smart only teaches the kid to avoid any effort that might fail. "When we praise children for their intelligence, we tell them that this is the name of the game: Look smart, don't risk making mistakes." Malcolm Gladwell chimes in with his thoughts on the importance of being a smart kid, "What a gifted child is, in many ways, is a gifted learner. And what a gifted adult is, is a gifted doer. And those are quite separate domains of achievement."

Extra people in your head?

What is it like having other people in your head? I'm talking about the experience of hearing voices in your head when you are wide awake that seem to belong to distinct entities that are not you and not people that you know.

Shade Tolerant Plants

Shade-tolerant plants! I have a small raised bed outside my door which is in deep shade, under a large white pine tree. I'm in coastal New Hampshire, Zone 5, somewhat moderated by the ocean effect. The soil is on the acidic side but is easily augmented. It's quite moist. I don't need veggies because I grow them in a community garden, but herbs would be nice, or just ornamental things. Any ideas as to what might grow?
