Backstabbing is not conducive to intellectual discourse

Malor - your arguments have to stand on their own merits without bringing other people's names up.

Keep the lolxtian talk to a minimum

"I wanted to ask for survival tips in case I am unexpectedly transported to a random location in Europe (say for instance current France/Benelux/Germany) in the year 1000 AD (plus or minus 200 years). I assume that such transportation would leave me with what I am wearing, what I know, and nothing else. Any advice would help." How to rock the Middle Ages with your bad 2008 self.

Danger Will Robinson! Sex life in jeopardy! Help!

So, my girlfriend and I have been in a long-term (almost 4 years) relationship with one another but, unfortunately, about a year and a half ago our sex life ground to a halt.

Do a curly-haired person's curly hairs all have the same chirality?

Do a curly-haired person's curly hairs all (or nearly all) have the same chirality (i.e., left-handed coils or right-handed coils)? Does it vary from person to person?

Of being a foster parent ... of kittens

The Big Picture

The Big Picture The Boston Globe launches a new blog focusing on a large single image from the day's news. It's kind of surprising how rare it is to see a really big photo on newspaper sites these days and this blog makes the simple concept work. [via mefi projects]

You look familiar.

Two Spanish women meet in their late twenties and realize that they're identical twins. The hospital had accidentally swapped one with another random newborn, and each family had unknowingly taken home the wrong baby. Now all three women - the two actual twins, and the one fake twin - are suing the hospital, who seriously did not have their act together. But there are all sorts of ways this could happen. For example...

Could you crib me some notes for my work-related robots vs. zombie debate later today? Why would robots defeat zombies in a knock-out, drag-out apocalypse? What are some humorous things to say about robots beating up zombies? Also: What are some questions for the moderator to ask that would lead to funny results?

The eye of Mordor

Six days ago, the Chaitén volcano in Chile began a surprise eruption. So far, more than 8000 people have been evacuated, and NASA has tracked the results from space. Even more stunning however, are the images that occurred when a thunderstorm collided with the volcanic plume.

How Not to Run for Congress

Some advice for Mefites who want to run for Congress: It is probably not a good idea to give a speech at a birthday celebration for Hitler. It is also generally considered tacky to discuss segregation in a positive light. Also, posting anti-Semitic comments, links to David Duke's website, and other scary but interesting articles to your official campaign website is probably not a good idea, even if you actually seem to be a reasonably competent lawyer.

I live MeFi in dreams

I had a dream last night that I was at the base of a pyramid, and there was something earth-destroying in the pyramid, like an ancient God-like evil. I had to work my way through the booby trapped maze of the pyramid to reach the evil before it awoke, and so I popped open my trusty laptop and went to AskMeFi and typed my first question: How do I get to the center of a booby trapped pyramid maze. The answers started pouring in, and I began my mission, dodging ancient mummies and flying spikes.

The Invisible Life of Poet

The Invisible Life of Poet is a webcomic by Christopher Stetson Wilson that's been published weekly for three and a half years. It features the adventures of nerdy high school student Poet and his retinue (mostly his friend Ben). There are many ways to navigate the archive. For a quality skim, check out the author's favorites. If you want a more indepth look you can check out the tag categories, characters (e.g. Seph the Corruptor, Coach Fathead), contemporary issues (e.g. class warfare, gender issues), culture and society (e.g. mass media, religion), hyperreality (e.g. board games, hallucinations), miscellaneous (e.g. great art, lowbrow humor) and psycho-social constructs (e.g. bullying, love and seduction).

DVD Burning 101 MetaQuestion

How do I back up my movies to DVD-R so I can take the backups to the gym on my portable and prevent my good ones from getting scratched? I just bought a new IMac running Leopard. It has the burner. From research, it looks like I need 1. Mac the Ripper---2.DVD 2toOneX (for compression)---and 3.Roxio Toast to burn (even though there is burning software on my computer).....I have no really good clue and am open to any support and advice you might have to offer. I don't want to buy things that are not so easy to work. I am a very basic computer user. thanks for your time!

Obesity vs. income?

Is obesity actually rare among high-income people compared to low-income people? Or is this a stereotype? And if many high-income folks are in fact slim, does the availability of more wholesome foods really explain it all? One would think that a big bank account would buy pantries full of richer, tastier food that's harder to resist than the cheap stuff.

Lisa Diamond's Place on the Web

"Many women experience a fluid sexual desire that is responsive to a person rather than a specific gender" A description of the topic for Lisa Diamond's new book, Sexual Fluidity. While waiting to get your copy of the book, why not read some of her papers? Here's one about young women who identify as lesbians or bisexuals and then change their minds. Was it a phase? (pdf) Here's one about the development of sexual orientation among adolescent and young adult women. (pdf) Here's one containing a new view of lesbian subtypes. (pdf) There are more.

The curious habits of the Mall Ninja

The Mall Ninja is easily distinguished by an abundance of “tactical” gear, such as fatigues, a thigh holster (with, of course, a Glock), combat boots, bandolier and other accouterments. Read the collected stories of the the Rapid Tactical Force at one of America’s largest indoor retail shopping areas! Marvel at their cunning equipment selection (such as duct taped trauma plates) and learn from their battles with the dreaded mall gangs.

Maybe More Than One Sheet of Paper, But Still

I got a forwarded email this morning purporting to be images from a contestat the Hirshhorn “Modern Art Gallery” in DC. The images were pretty cool; I’m not the only one who thought so. Just one thing, it turns out there was no contest and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has no connection that I could find with the artist, Peter Calleson. Still, however you find it, the work is well worth a look.

The Dyatlov Pass Mystery

Nine experienced cross-country skiers hurriedly left their tent on a Urals slope in the middle of the night at around -30 degrees Celsius for no obvious reason, casting aside skis, food, boots and most of their clothes. Soon they would be dead, some with injuries more suited to car crash victims, and apparently dosed with radiation. Their deaths are still unexplained, 49 years later. The Mystery of the Dyatlov Pass Accident.
