What influences do you come from?

"What Institution Are You From" by Helium is probably my favorite song ever. Please tell me what other songs have that melodic pre-postpunk-revival modal-indie-disco horror movie feel, because I certainly can't find them on my own.

Peru and Bolivia

I'm going to Peru and Bolivia in late May, with a small group. We're starting in Cusco and winding up in La Paz, with Macchu Pichu and other relatively well-known archeological sites on the itinerary. Have other MeFites had experience in that area? How about wonderful, off-the-beaten-track recommendations or practical tips? Google is remarkably short on substance on this.

More than Inka Kola

We're all familiar with Peruvian ceviche/cebiche (and if you're not, you should be), but what about ají de gallina (shredded chicken in walnut-cream-chile sauce)? There's also papa a la huancaína (potatoes with spicy cheese sauce) and ocopa (the same, but with pecans and huacatay/black mint). Oh, and don't forget anticúchos (marinated beef heart skewers) or causa limeña (hard to explain, but it's like a really amazing potato salad). Peru has a substantial and long-standing Chinese population, which has resulted in Chifa (some debate on whether that's Cantonese or Mandarin), Peru's "indigenous" Chinese culinary tradition. A staple (and my comfort food) of chifa is arroz chaufa (from Cantonese "chow fan," --> "fried rice").

Peruvian cuisine is getting a boost of interest around teh interwebs, thanks in no small part to dedicated blogs in English (1, 2, 3) and Spanish (1, 2). Even Wikipedia has a substantial entry in English and Spanish (and French). And the tourism industry hasn't missed out on this either (warning, food pr0n & YouTube).

How to get on rooftops in cities? (especially Portland, OR)

I'm looking for a knowledge base about how to get on rooftops in big cities. I live in Portland, OR, so Portland buildings are of the most immediate interest to me, but I'd be interested in any city.

Best PDA for medical students?

The g/f is starting her hospital rotations in 2 months, and apparently they must have a PDA. Any med students/doctors care to recommend a make/model, or software for it once we pick one out? Thanks.

Cornbread Nation

The Southern Foodways Alliance is one weighed-down church-supper table, full of oral history/blog projects like The Tamale Trail, the Boudin Trail, interviews and recipes from the Bartenders of New Orleans, photo essay/interviews from Birmingham's Greek-Americans, a mess o'homemade films, and a passel of event and BBQ-shack photos on Flickr, all smothered in the tangy-sweet academic goodness of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at Ole Miss. These folks get my vote for most flavorful, funkiest food-loving folklorists in the lower forty-eight.

Medical School Theme Song Filter

For all you current and former medical school students out there: what one song defined your experience in medical school - especially year one. I'm looking for the song that has meaning but also a bit of tongue-in-cheek built in. It's the song you came up with on the back side of a marathon study session (while delirious). Does such a song exist?

Cat Power?

Every time I've ever dined at a sushi restaurant there's been a statue of a cat by the cash register. It's always the same pose, with one paw raised in the air in a kind of "cat power" salute. What are these called and what do they signify?

Where are the feminist blogs that aren't superficial and/or tending towards ranty? I want more thoughtful analysis and intelligent discussion than you tend to find on feministing et al.

Which Central / South Amercian country speaks the clearest form of Spanish?

I'd like to attend an immersive language school -- but would like to learn to speak a relatively region- and dialect-free form. I recently heard a Bolivian Spanish speaker on the radio-- and his Spanish was beautiful. It's possible this is an entirely STUPID question I'm asking-- as any language may sound like mush coming from the mouths of dolts. But-- I tend not to be attacted the sound / clarity / speed of Mexican Spanish or the pronunciation used in Spain. ANY SUGGESTIONS? ALSO-- there are specific language schools in Central / South America would recommend? THANK YOU!

Spanish abroad

I want to go to Latin America for a couple months (2-3), starting at the end of August/beginning of September, to learn Spanish, immersion-style. Ideally, I would stay with a host family and go to small-ish classes every day.
