Ask post: Penicillin, you be illin'
I think the premise of your question is a bit shaky. Penicillin is OLD tech in medical terms (ie, cheap and generic), so the drug companies have all sorts of incentive to tell you about it's dangers, so that you'll take one of their newer and more expensive antibiotics instead.

Ask post: stainless cooking
The Frugal Gourmet always chanted, "Hot pan, cold oil, food won't stick!" and I find that largely to be true, for a certain set of circumstances. Proteins in general will stick until the Maillard reaction occurs which is why woks don't work very well until they develop a layer of seasoning or are non-stick (and why you shouldn't force a protein to move on stainless until it is ready to move, or you'll lose a layer of your food). This is also why eggs are best cooked in a non-stick... [more]

The following remarks were apparently made by John Swinton in 1880, then the preeminent New York journalist, probably one night in during that same year. Swinton was the guest of honour at a banquet given him by the leaders of his craft. Someone who knew neither the press nor Swinton offered a toast to the independent press. MeFi post: Man For Young Girl To Become My Wife
Man, you know those Powers of Ten things, where you start out looking at a magnified picture of something, and then every few seconds it shows another closeup in ten times greater detail, and eventually you start thinking "holy christ how can it get any more magnified than this" but it just keeps getting closer and closer in, and then finally you're just sitting there in slackjawed aesthetic awe gazing at all the depth and intricacy, all the... Ask post: Uses for Dr Bronner soap?
Dr. Bronners is great stuff. You cant eat it (my bad on that one) but it does clean things - everything darn near.

Anecdote: While on a summer-long field project where we were excavating 20-something odd sites and camping out to boot, we would have to drive a few miles down this insane road and then hike a mile or so to the river just to bathe. So at any one time, there were two truck-loads of filthy, stinky archaeologists heading for the water and the only soap we... [more]

Ask post: How can we help abused kids?
You might start with becoming a CASA (as noted above) which will put you in a direct way responsible for the well-being of a child who has been abused. I'm a CASA now and it was the perfect way for me, as a single non-parent who works a lot, to spend the free time I have helping children. It will also put you in a place to see how foster care works and make a real difference while you decide if that's a good role for you now or in the future. If you have any questions about being a CASA, me-mail... [more]

Ask post: Why do people assume he's a deadbeat?
I normally say, "He's not working right now due to a health problem," and when they then (inevitably) ask, "Well, what did he do before?"

I think this is where you can head off most of these questions at the pass. Miss Manners suggests giving vague, non-answer answers to questions that are nobody else's business. What did he do before? A little bit of this, a little bit of that, I'm not really sure but he was always very good at... [more]

MeFi post: Will the Dalai Lama reincarnate?
Personally, I find him to be as profound as a Hallmark Card. He's just a guy in funny clothes that doesn't deny it when people call him a Living God. Nice work if you can get it, I suppose. Unless you believe in modern, secular, democratic values, that is.

*shrugs* You may be right. I guess I've just always thought he seems like a pretty nice guy. To me, his fairly consistent position of moderation, conciliation and peace, actually feels quite... [more]

I think one can simultaneously think that the office of the Dalai Lama, like, say the office of the Pope, is a holdover from a feudal theocratic society AND think that the current office-holder is someone who does a good job, all things considered, in the role.

Now I myself don't think that about the current Pope, but I can point to past Popes that I do think that about. And I do think that the current Dalai Lama has done a very effective job of outreach to the rest of... [more]

Fluff, specifically when combined with cheap white bread and creamy peanut butter, and chased with a cold glass of whole milk, is the keystone component in one of the pinnacles of human culture, one of the seven wonders of the culinary world, the '47 Cheval Blanc of dessert sandwiches, the Fluffernutter.

Ask post: Wah Wah Wake Up
I like Desmond Morris's explanation, from his "Babywatching":

"Loneliness is a crucial factor in many instances of crying, especially in those cases where the more obvious causes such as hunger are absent. If a baby feels isolated from his parents he may cry until he is in close physical contact with them again. Being alone too much can make a baby feel insecure, the repeated need for close physical contact may be inconvenient for many busy parents, but... [more]

After about a half an hour you realise Juno isn't really quirky and edgey but practically conservative propaganda. Abortion as an option dissapears in a second, and adopting away the baby is instantly considered the right solution (despite the fact that she has a loving and supportive family etc). Garners character is a loon with serious control issues, but these are all swept away when she fulfills every real womans dream of becoming a mother (despite being in the middle of a divorce). Ask post: Help Choosing a Dog Breed
Almost everyone I know with a dog got it from a shelter or a rescue society, and they are uniformly wonderful dogs with no behavior problems. In some areas, probably with no-kill shelters and good sterilization programs, maybe a lot of shelter dogs come with serious problems, I don't know. But in most places shelter dogs are severely selected for good behavior — the biters and the snarlers get euthanized to make room for the adoptable, friendly dogs.

Ask post: Help my wife find a bilingual job
The hospital I work for is almost always looking for translators. It's not just about fluency, though; there's normal fluency and medical terminology fluency. There seems to be a decent amount of advocacy involved in helping patients get to the resources they need. To find these jobs, you'd want to look at the local hospitals' employment sections; here in CT they don't often advertise on third-party sites.

One evening, I climbed aboard a bus and stepped on the hem of my dress as I did so.

I managed to clutch it to myself and quickly gather all the buttons before shuffling to a seat in the midst of others (grownups, no less) giggling.
