How can I plan a trip to Iceland this August? What do you recommend to do, where to stay, what to budget ... and how can we spend money intelligently rather than in tourist traps, etc.

Natural selection observed in a lab

In the 1980s, Richard Lenski hypothesized that his research team should be able to watch random mutations and natural selection taking place in a lab by observing a bacteria population over many generations. In 1988, beginning with a single bacterium, he started several replicate colonies. Recently, after 33,127 generations, his team has observed natural selection.

Help me hold my head up high

I'm very tall (6'6"), and like most tall people, struggle with posture - I tend to slump my shoulders forward and tilt my head down, especially when standing. Are there any exercises that target that area (upper back, neck) that will pull the shoulders back and make standing/sitting properly "feel right"? (I lift weights regularly, but I think my back is a weak spot - the more I lift, the worse I feel my posture gets.)

Why do CISC chips need to translate instructions?

Why can't CISC instruction sets be converted to RISC/uops by an advanced assembler so that CISC chips, such as Intel's Atom, would be able to run with a simpler instruction decode hardware?

Luke Kelly: The Performer

Casual fans of Irish folk-punk bands like The Pogues, Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys rarely take the time to investigate the sources of their inspiration. Those who do, cannot avoid coming across the The Dubliners.

Heading to Trinidad & Tobago

A few friends and I are planning a trip to Trinidad & Tobago this summer. We are going to spend a few days in each place. Does anyone have any recommendations on places to stay, things we should do, where we should eat, who makes the best roti, places to see old style Calypso or modern Soca or Rapso, where to find the best rum tour, etc...? I have been researching ideas at the library and on various travel forums, but I would like to hear from any of you who have been to (or live in) Trinidad or Tobago.

Staff Benda Bilili

The other day I happened to come upon a music video that is just so grooving, so human and so real, that, well, it moved me, darling. Just check it out. After watching the clip, I learned that these guys are mostly disabled by polio (that's why several of them are in those rather unusual wheelchairs) and that they were living on the grounds of the Kinshasa zoo, which is where the clip was filmed. Then I learned that last year they were seeking to bring a lawsuit against the UN. Then I found some other clips. And now I am a major fan of Staff Benda Bilili.

How can I search for cheap, last minute flights out of a particular city, but with no particular destination in mind?

I often find myself with an open weekend and an urge to fly to no place in particular, just to go exploring. Whether it's Sioux City, Billings, or Biloxi, I figure I can entertain myself anywhere for a weekend. Are there websites that allow you to search for cheap, last minute flights from a given origin, irrespective of destination? Most sites require you to enter a destination, which makes the whole process a lot more difficult.

Boggs and Gedney, a perfect match.

The stark, modal banjo and achingly poignant, weathered voice of the great Dock Boggs [previous] are the perfect aural accompaniment to a slideshow of William Gedney's [previous] powerfully intimate photographs: Kentucky, 1964.

Genetic distance - Why angle rather than magnitude of difference?

Why is it that the genetic "distance" between two populations would be determined by the angle between their position vectors rather than the magnitude of their respective displacements?

Scifi: is it worth a cat's pockets?

My girlfriend's mother and I have a real intellectual rapport, in some ways. Recently we've been talking about literature. She's extraordinarily widely read, but only really within the canon. I've been fronting, claiming that genre fiction like sci-fi has plenty of stuff of genuine literary merit in it. She's called my bluff and asked for a recommendation. What would you suggest? I was thinking something strange and ornate like Cordwainer Smith, but am open to advice.

Why would raking/iterative proportional fitting be making my sample *less* efficient?

Praying that some statistically-minded MeFites are online today! I'm trying to run a generalized raking (aka "iterative proportional fitting") algorithm on some survey data as a poststratification approach. The literature I've read suggests that this should both improve the quality of my estimates and potentially reduce my standard errors by a decent amount. Instead, my SEs are increasing by a factor of about 1.4 (ugh!!!) Can someone offer some suggestions as to why this might be happening?

Banjo without the Inbreeding

I'm a sucker for the "dying but smiling" feeling I get from the sound of a banjo. What modern/recent songs have banjo in them? I'm looking for things that don't fall neatly under the category of bluegrass - a pop/rock/alternative song that just happens to have a banjo rather than Bela Fleck/String Cheese Incident/Cherryholmes type stuff.
