Where Musicians Come to Play

Larry Groce has been producing Mountain Stage in West Virginia for 25 years. This weekly radio and public television program has been broadcasting the best mountain music in Appalachia, usually from the WV Cultural Center. This month NPR began distributing the show nationally in the U.S. Also, last year Mountain Stage began archiving podcasts of the programs ... many, many hours of wonderful mountain music.

VF: How the Web Was Won

Vanity Fair has a typically excellent article out -- "How the Web Was Won," an oral history of the Web. Even if you're familiar with ARPANet, Metcalfe's Law, Pearl Harbor Day, the VC rush, whatever -- the story told by the often-animated people at the center of the whirlwind is an enlightening and entertaining experience. And for those of you don't know the history of the Internet, learn it! This is part of your heritage now.

Best conferences for technology law and policy?

What are the most interesting conferences related to technology/Internet law or policy? You can include things that are tangentially related but would still be very helpful or cool to attend for someone interested in this area (e.g. Defcon).

Primary care doctor / GP in Chicago area?

I'm fairly new to the Chicago area; now that my medical coverage has kicked in, I'm looking for a good general practitioner / primary care physician. I live in Oak Park, but that's not really a restriction; I'm certainly willing to travel a bit for an excellent doctor. So, Chicagoland submodule of HealthFilter: your suggestions?

Dreams and Songs of the Noble Old

Dreams and Songs of the Noble Old, a film by Alan Lomax, takes a loving look at the talents and wisdom of elderly musicians, singers, and story-tellers from southern American folk traditions. All the musicians featured in the film have soul and musical energy to spare: great, great performances and engaging reminiscences make this film a real treat. Please see the [more inside] for a collection of links to several of the outstanding performers featured in the film.

Essential.... essential.... essential...

Since 1993, Pete Tong has been hosting the Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1. A group on imeem seems to have uploaded them all. Tracklistings here. Some of the best of all time: Carl Cox - 1996 (tracklisting), Paul Oakenfold - 1994 - (The Goa Mix) (TL), Leftfield - 1994 (TL). A few good ones from the last couple of years: Justice, (TL), Soulwax (TL), Eric Prydz (TL). And one of my personal favorites -- Scott Bond - 2000 (TL)

The Third World Squat

The Third World Squat (Some images not 100% safe for work) When it comes to training someone who's new to the world of squats, deadlifts, and the fine art of picking up heavy stuff, I've found a substantial disparity in the learning curve between North Americans and those from third-world countries . . . There are a variety of possible reasons for this, but there's one dominant variable that's a great predictor of a trainee's immediate potential before they even step foot in the gym: The third-world squat.

List of melodic guitar ballads

What's your all time favorite melodic guitar ballad? Along the lines of "American Tune" by Paul Simon, I'm looking for emotional, touching, tunes I can play and sing along with on the guitar. Emphasis on melodic and ballad, so "Vincent" by Don McLean would be a fit, but "More than Words" by Extreme wouldn't cut it for me, although it's a nice tune -- it's relatively lacking melody and relies a lot on gimmicky syncopated guitar work.

Defending Everything But Your Time

Rails of War is a terrific flash game, where you equip a train with ever-increasing combinations of weapons and guide it through various missions. It is a representative of the growing number of Defense-style flash strategy games started by Tower Defense and friends, which we discussed before. Now you can try Age of War, where you try to destroy an opponents base through five distinct eras; Invasion Tactical Defense where you must manage a nuclear missile plant and its anti-aircraft defenses; the inevitable and previously mentioned zombie defense games; StarCraft FA5, where you are the Zerg defending your base; and the lovely and abstract Red. These is a particularly addictive class of games, so be warned...

What gear should I wear to run in the winter? I've always moved indoors and run on the treadmill or just quit for the season and got fat but I want to try to keep running outside this winter.
