MeFi post: Canada's second National Anthem, no more.
Would now be a good time to bring up the theme music from the Friendly Giant?

Yes.

Look up. Look waaaay up.

MeFi post: Boom boom bap.
Similarly (and equally awesome) are Dave Grohl's drum tracks for a select few Queens of the Stone Age songs.

Ask post: Do I just suck it up?
Three things:

1) Decrease overall body fat.
2) Exercising my transversus abdominis helped me.

Totally different than your abs-

a) stand in front of a mirror and carefully LET you gut hang out. DO NOT PUSH your gut out. Be careful. Don't get a hernia.
b) without flexing your abs, use your transversus abdominus to flatten your gut, right across your pelvic bones, like a seatbelt. (Sort of between... [more]

Most just traditional crunches, bicycle sit ups and some weight work for those areas.

There's your problem. You, like most people, are focusing too much on developing a six-pack.

For a truly strong and stable core, you need to develop the Transversus Abdominus (TA) and Multifidus (MF) muscle-groups. These are deep-layer muscles that should be under constant, involantary contraction when you're upright to stabilize your... [more]

Ask post: How can this pilgrim acquire faith?
This is a big question, and there have been some interesting answers thus far. In the interest of full disclosure, I will say this: I am an academic- a budding scholar of religious studies, continental philosophy, and naturalistic explanations of religion (e.g. 'meme' theory or evolutionary psychology). Right now I am doing graduate work in the history and philosophy of science, studying the intersection of religion and science. The question you just asked is a central concern of mine,... [more]

Ask post: Which car stereo + ipod adapter best integrates an ipod?
Harmon Kardon has a product that will more likely meet your needs. External display and controller so you don't have to fiddle with the iPod itself. ~$200.

Ask post: Jogging memories. Ah, the feeling of tracksuit sliding betwixt my legs, the honking of angry drivers.
This article from last year has a bunch of ways that a cognitive scientist used for said jogging on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?

Ask post: Intestinal Distress
Mangosteen is chock-full of antioxidants. Total antioxidant capacity is reduced in Crohn's disease. So eat mangosteen, or any number of other antioxidant-rich foods: antioxidant supplementation reduces oxidative stress. Mangosteen has a high xanthone content, but you need to make sure eat (or juice) the pericarp (fruit wall/rind) to get at it. As seen on Pubmed (search for mangosteen), they do seem to have anti-inflammatory benefits. Check out Noni^ juice as another potential selective... [more]

Ask post: My problem is not in my head, it's in my guts. Help me figure out what it is.
I had many of the symptoms you've described and like arimathea, Protonix has worked wonders. My problem turned out to be excessive stomach acid which caused an ulcer in the fundus (top part of the stomach, I think).

I would push for an upper GI/endoscopy, if you haven't had one already. I suffered with the "stomach flu" for more than two months before I convinced my Gastroenterologist into giving me an upper GI and voila, ... ulcer.... [more]

Ask post: So this is Easter... and what have you done
If you don't believe in a higher being that is anthropomorphic, you don't believe in a higher being at all.

Pantheists, Pandeists, Panendeists, Panentheists, Theists, and Transtheists would disagree with you on that.... [more]

Ask post: List some specific, widely held, possibly irrational turn-ons.
A good friend of mine who was loved by all of the women said his secret was that he listened to them and showed it.

Ask post: How to overcome defenses and lose the emotional baggage?
The way I handle people and relationships or new friends or whatever is that they automatically get a 100% score. So only if they actually let me down in someway, I start treating them more carefully. But the default setting is that they're all good. Everybody gets the benefit of doubt, and in bad situations, I treat people like I expect to be treated. Regarding defensiveness, I've found the best approach is to not react at all. So if somebody says something that annoys you and makes you want to... [more]

Ask post: Advice on how to get through the holiday season without losing my mind and my temper?
I finally got sick of the petty games my father's wife used to play (letting me set up a visit and then telling me not to come at the last minute, telling us we had to wait for an invitation that never came, not letting my father know that I had called, visiting her alcoholic wife-beating son who lived a couple of miles from us but never letting us know they were in town, cutting out his natural grandchildren in favor of his stepgrandchildren at family events in a mean and pointed way, telling... Ask post: PVR power on by remote?
That said, I'm hoping you find an answer that I can use to turn on my Xbox Media Center from the couch (without resorting to a 6' power stick).

XIR Easy Kit is a mod that accomplishes just this, but I think it needs to be supported by your mod chip (pretty sure xecuter3 can do this, not sure about any others).
