Here's a little project I've been working on this...

Symmetry explorer Here's a little project I've been working on this week. It grabs photos from Flickr on any subject you like (e.g. kittens, or other fluffy things) and then presents them as pairs of mirrored halves. (If that makes no sense now, it will when you vist the site! :-) ) The results can end up quite weird and strange. :-) Here are a few of my favourites... (Thin/Fat cat) / (Fluffy dog thing) / (Seen my head(s)?)

Eureka Hunt

"That's why so many insights happen during warm showers."[pdf/html]
A print-only print-mostly article in last week's New Yorker magazine fascinatingly describes the neurological processes behind human insight, with nods to Henri Poincaré's omnibus eureka ("Having reached Coutances, we entered an omnibus to go some place or other. At the moment when I put my foot on the step the idea came to me, without anything in my former thoughts seeming to have paved the way for it") and Archimedes' bathtub eureka* ("Eureka!")

Indie platformer extravaganza!

Do you enjoy classic 2D platformers? Then boy, are you in luck! The indie game community is thriving, and a good majority of its games are exactly that. I've spent many hours playing these unique, beautiful, and often exceptional projects, and there's quite a few - more than I can count on my fingers! - that could stand toe-to-toe with the finest contemporary games. Inside is a list of some of the greatest indie platformers, based on community recommendations and my own experience. Enjoy!

Angeline

This is a cover *gulp* (really more of a tribute) of a song by this other band called O'Death. I contacted them a while ago about doin it and they said hell yeah, do it up. (They are quite a different sort of band from us). Anyway, this is me singin an playin the fiddle. Hope you like it.

Flyball's Lament (the short version)

I made this little song last night. The lyrics, albeit very simple, have been stuck in my head for some time. And they reminded me of Captain Fred Stone and Flyball drifting silently through the cosmos. I guess this would have to be before Flyball hooked up with Moofa, the cat from mars, and had kittens. And a warning: the first time through the chorus is a bit rough.

At least as interesting as a one-link-to-wikipedia post.

Max/MSP is a graphical programming environment primarily used for music, video and multimedia. Max/MSP has sometimes been described as a digital erector set. David Tinapple describes Max in this way: "it's like you're drawing a diagram of what you want the program to do, and then when you're done drawing the diagram you've also sort of accidentally programmed it".

Help me build a small, light, battery-powered time-lapse photography rig?

I'd like to do a time-lapse movie of photos taken every 30 seconds during a week-long, 500 mile ride I'm doing later this year. But the rig has to be small, light, automatic, and run for hours a day without a recharge. Is this possible? (something tells me Make Magazine probably already covered this at one point)

The joys of a well-stocked desk

WhiteCollarFilter: For the very first time, I now have a desk (and office!) to myself at work. What handy, practical, useful, or fun things should I keep at hand? I'm not really seeking desk toys and the like so much as the kind of creative, thrifty, perhaps unexpected objects, tools, and supplies you've found useful over the years.

Timing, forget the timing

Automatic investment plans (e.g. employee retirement accounts) often seem to make their investments on the first day of the month. If millions of people are known to consistently invest in markets on the same day of each month, does this have an effect on the price of what they purchase?

Salary Negotiation Help

I am starting a new career in a profession that is in demand, and I am just beginning the interview process. I feel confident in my skills, and I am aware that my resume looks pretty good. But prior to grad school, I only worked entry-level positions where the central issue in the interview process was "Pleasepleaseplease hire me!" I need advice from MeFites who have better job selection and salary negotiation skills than me.

Wookin' pa Dub

I'd like to get a little more into dub and acquire some albums. I like what I understand to be the more typical kind of tracks: long, rumbly instrumentals and would prefer to largely avoid anything with predominant vocals. Does anyone have any particular albums or artists to recommend? Compilations are a-okay.
