Civil Rights defeat in Maine

Maine became the 31st state to block same-sex marriage through a public referendum Some said the loss was a sign that the state-by-state approach favored by the largest gay-rights groups had failed and that the focus should move to repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, which bans federal recognition of same-sex marriage, and which Congress can overturn without voter approval. Others argued that the defeat only reinforced the need to keep winning grassroots support.

Where could one be a modern hermit?

Everyone has their if-I-win-the-lottery/if-my-company-gets-bought dreams. Mine involves settling down in a small house somewhere to a comfortable life of solitude with all the modern conveniences. But my daydreaming brain has an unfortunate practical streak, insisting on knowing exactly where I could do that, and would it be safe, how could I get food, yadda yadda.

So I still want to be a rockstar/astronaut when I grow up...

I'm curious to know about the people out there with fun, interesting, unusual, or quirky jobs. All lines of work considered, as long as it's fun/something you feel excited about doing most days and/or something my high school guidance counselor wouldn't have known about.

Tell me about a time when you were on the receiving end of a truly romantic act.

I'm looking for stories from folks, especially ladyfolks, who have been on the receiving end of random acts of romance. Tell me, when were you surprised by a romantic act? What was it? What were the circumstances?

Has anyone taken a psychic reading here?

Has anyone taking a psychic reading? I am thinking of taking a reading from Char Margolis? I do know of James Randi foundation, and I am aware that there are lots of scams. I am skeptical, but I'd like to check for myself before deciding one way or the other. It would be great to hear from someone who has actually taken the reading (either with Char or someone else). How was the experience like? Is it worth spending the time and money (Char charges 600$).

Professional photography website by an amateur

Hi guys, I would like to make my way as a photographer, and I know making a supemotherlovin' website is essential. I have seen a lot of professional photographers using flash based websites and I see they are rather stylish but often slow (although I understand it is partially necessary for copyright protection). What I would like to ask is: what is the quickest/easiest way for me to make a professional looking website?

What are your examples of family jargon?

What are some examples of "family jargon"? For example, a friend's father once told a joke to his family that poked fun at the French. He concluded by saying, "Don't tell anyone from France." Now, within their family, "Don't tell anyone from France" means "Let's keep this between us"--and they say it even if the secret has nothing to do with the French.

You are getting sleepy. . .

Contrary to what you probably think you know about hypnosis, it can be done very quickly and can be used to convince someone to do something they normally wouldn't--like, say, giving away their wallet, phone, and keys to a stranger (English mentalist Derren Brown). What's happening here is known as a handshake induction, a technique pioneered by American psychiatrist Milton Erickson. There are other methods of rapid induction hypnosis. These methods, along with techniques of verbal suggestion, are used by practitioners of Neuro-linguistic programming, a field which some have associated with Mr. Brown's performances, though he denies it. I wonder, though, how he manages to get a cashier at a dog track to pay out on a losing ticket?
