Help Me Cook!

Are there any websites out there that will give you recipes based on what you have in your fridge/pantry?

They hacked our Joomla, help!

We've been hacked! We were just about to upgrade the Joomla version, and then we get this. Looks to be a ransom page, but we obviously want to reverse the hack. How do we do this?

The art of showing, not telling?

What science fiction films are there, iyho, that really measure up to the best of written work in that genre?

(Un)connecting Domains

If I host 2 domains (for example, www.work.com and www.family.com) on the same basic Dreamhost hosting package, is there any way for someone -- other than Dreamhost -- to associate the two domains?

Music to make you sad

Can anyone recommend some pensive, melancholy, dirge-like chamber music for rainy days and blue moods? (Other genres, like post-rock, are also acceptable--but no vocals please . . .) Thanks.

Subtitles in letterbox area

Why are movie subtitles almost never put into the black letterbox areas, outside the picture?

Web-journal about working in a porn store.

A friend was telling me about a very well written web-journal about a woman working in a video-porn shop. Where can I find this?

How can I make the Internet tell me when to plant things?

Tastyfreshveggiesfilter: does anyone know of a public calendar or similar notification service to which an aspiring gardener who has dirt and planting in his genes but has little prior experience with the green stuff could subscribe, e.g., in Google Calendar or iCal?

How to stop young dudes from taking over library ‘puters

I work at a public library where we use a popular pc reservation and management system for our public PCs. Some young dudes come in, bypass the login screens and play World of Warcraft etc from their flash disks. My concern is they’ve managed to get admin privileges to do naughty things like extend their session time and kick other people with reservations off. I am just a lowly circulation clerk wondering if anyone could explain HOW these fellows bypass the reservation system and some possible strategies I could suggest while I wait to unleash my ultimate plan for a sound proof gamers lounge.

I think I may have found the perfect metaphor for...

I think I may have found the perfect metaphor for the Mefi network experience: it's like travelling, with high spirits and pleasant anticipation, to visit an out-of-town friend for the weekend - someone you've always liked and with whom you have a great deal in common, but once you get there, they are, like, rushing to put a coaster under your glass, and looking at you nervously as lower yourself into what must obviously be the wrong chair. And they're all like,"Ooh. Could you please not walk on that carpet? It just gets dirty so easily." and "Oh, no! Don't use that soap - it's really just decorative; here's the soap we use." and "Oh. Thanks for taking care of the dishes, but we don't put our glassware in the dishwasher." And when they come into the guest room to say good night, they tell you what time breakfast will be on the table, and then close the window you just opened to alleviate some of the stifling heat. "Insects, you know. We get a lot of 'em out here." And the next morning you have your bags repacked and sitting out on the front porch before dawn, ready for the first possible opportunity to get the hell out of there, and they are all like "Oh, no! You're not leaving so soon are you? We were having so much fun!" [SI more DE]

The Muscle Shoals Sound

The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section was comprised of four session musicians operating out of the tiny northern Alabama town of town Muscle Shoals. Just four unassuming crackers who happened to have provided the funky underpinning for a huge number of hit songs by, among others, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Paul Simon, Joe Cocker, The Staple Singers , Jimmy Cliff and many, many others. Hey, they were the house band to the greats. Big respect to the men from 3614 Jackson Highway! [note: see hoverovers for link descriptions]

Apparently, ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny! Which I can only assume means something!
