I got to see metafilter user Cold Chef yesterday when he eulogized his best friend, my nephew. Can you imagine giving the eulogy for your best friend? (Perhaps you have done that.) Cold Chef told me before the service that he had talked to Jessamyn who had told him "You've been training for this your whole life". He spoke for about 30 minutes; he was funny and warm and gave a marvelous tribute to the deceased with many stories that I hadn't known.

MeFi post: Vampire Viruses :[
Tiny nit: The prospect in the video linked in the article is to use virus (can’t remember the plural of virus) to kill bacteria, not vampire bacteria used to kill other bacteria. Phage therapy has been a thing for decades but not in the US under the FDA.

The article is about a small virus that attaches itself to the neck of a larger bacteria killing virus. Thus the vampire virus. Virus to virus vampirism, not virus to bacteria vampirism.

And I... [more]

MetaTalk post: MeFi Nonprofit -- Volunteers, Purpose, Name
My suggestion above (the Organization for Human Interaction Online) was actually not a joke (the acronym was a joke, as was the slogan that occurred to me later - "We want to do right but not right now") mostly because a broader organization name and a mission slightly broader than "administer Metafilter.com" may be something that the community wants in the longer term. The AO3 org - the Organization for Transformative Works - doesn't just run AO3, they also have a legal... [more]

I came across MetaFilter in early 2001, just before I turned 20, first tried to join in 2002, and finally got in about a year and a half later. Any way you look at it, I’ve been on here half my life, and all my adult years. During that time I’ve lived in three different countries, six different towns and cities, and have had to find new social nets of my own. But MetaFilter’s always been there, an island village I carry with me around the world. There are dozens of MeFites, even hundreds, whose... [more]

My association with this song is always gonna be this MTV/Lineage 2 music video, which happened in the extremely brief window in which I was the L2 community manager for North America. It was in no way my marketing win - I have no idea how it happened, actually - but we considered it a huge marketing win.

It, uh, hasn't aged well. Good lord.

That’s a super video thanks hippybear. mmrtnt that was likely a secure floor e.g. banking, laboratory (especially level 5 or forensic), security, or a machine deck (pumps, air con etc., mass-damper etc). Yeah the surburban street names throw a wrench in the works.

The thing about knowing your neighborhood like the back of your hand is not knowing the names of all the local streets. It’s knowing your way around by feel, from deep down in your bones. Ask a local how to navigate somewhere, and you get that cliche, “go left at the 7 Eleven that used to be Nate’s bike shop.”

I’d like to try a version of this that uses street view, drops you... [more]

I think I would have reinforced it with some brazed copper rod in places - just thin stuff, say 2mm. I'd imagine that would give it a lot more rigidity. You probably wouldn't even notice it once it's covered in solder and given a patina.

Really interesting text! This is a big issue for historians because of the ever-present problem of archive digitization. You'd think it'd be a really straightforward question, but it brings in a lot of factors most people don't consider. How high should the quality be on stored archival files, for instance? Do you optimize for loading times or accuracy? How do you replicate the organization of a file in a digital format? I've recently been working with a lot of documents archived in the... [more]

Oooh I have thoughts! I'll share the agenda of a bachelor party that I recently helped plan and host and attended...plus some lessons learned. It was in NYC, not Portland, but I feel like our vibe was similar to what you're hoping for.

Lesson 1: We booked a big house on Airbnb for everyone to stay together, and at the last minute, they cancelled on us! So literally the day everyone was arriving, we had to switch to a block of hotel rooms. That worked out great, because... [more]

Congrats to your friend!

My best piece of advice: Your small-group planning experience is actually ideal for this situation.

A three-day bachelor party is not an actual thing; thankfully, twenty people do not want to do the exact same activities and spend every waking minute together. It's not seamless, by design.

You're planning a couple of reservation-necessary anchor outings for the full group.... [more]

Most people are positively terrible at choosing the settings on their TV sets, and that doesn't help either.

It's pretty simple: turn off anything that sounds like software ("enhance," "emphasize," "detect" etc.) All of that motion smoothing bullshit, especially. Then turn the brightness way up and the sharpness way down.

It is a known thing in my circle of friends that if they buy a new TV, they can and... [more]
