I got to see metafilter user Cold Chef yesterday when he eulogized his best friend, my nephew. Can you imagine giving the eulogy for your best friend? (Perhaps you have done that.) Cold Chef told me before the service that he had talked to Jessamyn who had told him "You've been training for this your whole life". He spoke for about 30 minutes; he was funny and warm and gave a marvelous tribute to the deceased with many stories that I hadn't known.

Tiny nit: The prospect in the video linked in the article is to use virus (can’t remember the plural of virus) to kill bacteria, not vampire bacteria used to kill other bacteria. Phage therapy has been a thing for decades but not in the US under the FDA.

The thing about knowing your neighborhood like the back of your hand is not knowing the names of all the local streets. It’s knowing your way around by feel, from deep down in your bones. Thanks for sharing this Cortex. It was a lot of fun watching all her trial and error and a good reminder that sometimes things just don't fit right. I like what she said after the second set-back, "A step back is still a step." Her persistence and adaptability paid off in the end and she turned out such a beautiful creation. Love it.

I think I would have reinforced it with some brazed copper rod in places - just thin stuff, say 2mm. I'd imagine that would give it a lot more rigidity. You probably wouldn't even notice it once it's covered in solder and given a patina.

That being said, the one bit of advice I can give is that at night-time, try to stay close to the coast, helps keep the horror at bay or at least a bit more bearable in regards to escaping or running away when shit hits the fan.

Most people are positively terrible at choosing the settings on their TV sets, and that doesn't help either.

It's pretty simple: turn off anything that sounds like software ("enhance," "emphasize," "detect" etc.) All of that motion smoothing bullshit, especially. Then turn the brightness way up and the sharpness way down.
