The word on Reddit is that this is science fiction based on actual research, but unfortunately I can't go get the references because Reddit's shitting itself.

On the one hand, this is really like watching a Cronenberg film in reverse. On the other, intact, freely-flexing hand, an awful lot of the world would be better off it it was more like a Cronenberg film in reverse.
