I got to the server at 5:52PM PST, but now it looks to be completely slashdotted. Now that domains are less than $12 a year at joker.com, it's not that big a deal to pay for them, but free is free....

Slashdotted before it's even posted on Slashdot, that's harsh.

I was able to get there and go through the process, but it's seriously broken. It kept telling me I had syntax errors in various lines of the form, but I could resubmit the form over and over without any changes, and each time it would tell me I had different errors or that I'd left fields blank when I hadn't. Finally I got it to go through, and it told me the name was taken, when AFAIK it isn't.

I wouldn't trust them to maintain a domain name, even for free.

I got stopped by repeated syntax errors, too, but they've issued a Press Release about how overwhelmed the NSI registry was by the demand (?), how "hundreds of thousands" tried and "thousands" got their domains. It does include an e-mail address for "feedback"; think 180 db is enough?

I had thought about registering through the free thing, but reading through the terms and conditions, and trying to follow all the broken links they had in their help section alone, I decided against it.
