Mommy, mommy, I want to get my teeth kicked in this Halloween!

Well, Vampires aren't thought by most the country to have just killed thousands of people. The mask is in bad taste. I don't know if someone deserves their teeth kicked in for wearing one, but its not exactly the most classy thing one can wear.
TRICK OR TREAT!

Bad taste I can understand, that's all a part of halloween, but as Doug said, the whole nation was affected by the current situation to a degree we haven't experienced in 60 years. I'm not condoning violence, just fearful of the violence that might ensue by those with a limited sense of humor, or those who are intolerant. I can imagine this happening on South Park, but it just doesn't feel right on Main Street, USA.

All this must be prefaced BTW, by the fact that these masks might not even be distributed here in the states...

Just as long as they come with a small rubber Bert on the left shoulder...

Regardless of where the masks may be distributed, I still find it quite fascinating/terrifying how people are playing right along the wishes of the terrorists by increasing the attention around Osama - some even distastefully trying to make cash from the whole thing, with sites providing handgun targets or quite horrible "great t-shirt designs."

Not that I don't find the idea of an Osama Handgun Target slightly amusing ;)

Thank you machaus, for making me laugh with that headline!

What they're not telling you is that if you buy the Osama mask you must buy the companion Bert mask also.

I've seen quite a bit of these Osama masks (rubber mask version, complete with costume wardrobe, the whole nine) for sale here in Mexico city for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos (Dead people day - nov.2), and goes without saying they are selling like hotcakes.

Perceptions change a lot between countries.

I dunno if they'll even make it to America. Perhaps some masochistic lads would be happy on using them there.

Or not.

After Pearl Harbour, would you have gone out as a kamikaze Japanese? Think about it.

Some customers are interested in patriotic-themed costumes — no doubt in response to terrorist attacks. [One costume shop] has sold some Uncle Sam masks. Several people have asked about a Statue of Liberty costume, which they don’t sell. A few customers have asked if an Osama bin Laden mask is available.

“I actually think that’s a rumor. We don’t have it and I really doubt that the manufacturers would have time to make that.”

[Another store] said they don’t have any bin Laden masks either, but could put a bin Laden costume together.

“We do have Arabic costumes so someone could come if they wanted to and we could make up an Osama costume. But I think those are sick people.”

(The whole "adult Hallowe'en" stuff is freaky anyway, if you're from a culture that abandons the concept once you hit your teens.)

It is pedantic, but I don't think anyone would understand the word Kamikaze till the war was nearly over. I get the idea, and no I don't think anyone would have considered dressing like a Japanese pilot.

c'mon, you gotta love it. I mean, what better antidote to fear than countless little Osamas running innocently around begging for candy and pennies for Unicef? (I bet you didn't know a sighting of the Tooth Fairy was actually known to cause widespread fear and panic until kids starting dress up as her for Halloween....)

(Seriously, I think it's troubling; it risks making light of the evil that that man is (apparently) responsible for.)

Well, I think a Ted Bundy mask is pretty fucked up, too.

All I'm saying is, I'd hate to be the ass who's wearing that mask around somebody who believes Osama Bin Laden killed somebody they love. It's just too fresh.

Not to mention the fact that this will give Osama Bin Laden an oppurtunity to walk around America undetected on the 31st. Do we really want that?

Wow, thats wierd. I was wondering if someone was going sell something like that for Halloween. Guess they couldn't pass up the opportunity.

O.k. I'll be honest, I know people who suggested getting two people together and going as the WTC, then if there was anyone dressed as a fireman or police officer, they would attack them. Or they would also get two friends to go as airplanes and have them keep running into them.

Or they would carry little toy airplanes, and keep hitting themselves.

Yes, yes horrible I know, but gallows humor soes have its place... Wasn't it 1984 where once you lost your ability to laugh, they had finally taken control of you?

Where are these sick, depraved masks going? Probably the West Bank and the Middle East.
posted by ParisParamus at 4:19 AM on October 22, 2001

Masks of this sort are mostly for westerners with some income to dispose of around the end of the month.

Skallas: they have anti-American parades in the West Bank all the time. Iraq is another place.
