How about some creepy electronic music?

"Second Bad Viibel" by Autechre (off their Tri Repetae++ release), "Gwarek 2" by Aphex Twin (off his new album Drukqs) or basically almost the whole damn Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 release by Aphex Twin as well.

Play any of the above and send the neighborhood kids scampering away.

Can't not have Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" in there (though his "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" would make for a better Halloween costume...).

almostcool: don't forget Autechre's Confield in its entirety. That album's got a feeling of lonesome, impending doom that's hard to top.

And for even more creepy isolationism, Main is hard to beat.

It's already been said, but I'll put my vote in for "Bela Lugosi is Dead" by Bauhaus.

However, you can't possibly have a musical collection for Halloween without including the soundtrack for the "shower scene" from "Psycho". Simply the scariest 30 seconds of music in movie history.
(but the "Jaws" dah-dum comes close)

"do the zombie" and "she's fallen in love with a monster man" -- the eyeliners

anything by the groovie ghoulies

"chain saw", "i don't wanna go down to the basement", and "pet sematery" -- ramones

for sheer halloween mood you can't beat ghostland by goblin market -- "highgate", maybe?

"the ravenna witch" and "the secret in her smile" ("she is the cause and the effect/it's in the bite marks on her neck!") -- the green pajamas

"tracy i love you" -- luna

and, finally, the one, the only "scream and run away" by the baudelaire memorial chorale (better known as the magnetic fields)

Kronos Quartet's Black Angels is pretty creepy. Their Schnittke album scares they hell out of me as well, come to think of it. And there was a Current 93 album that almost made me run from the room, but damed if I can remember the title of it. Oh, and of course Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus.

Anything by Skinny Puppy is appropriate for Halloween. I am slightly partial to the live version of "Harsh Stone White".
posted by Greggbert at 7:19 PM on October 31, 2001

Side note about Skinny Puppy:
Rumour has it that the name of the band came from the skinny dog at the Haunted Mansion in DisneyLand, as mentioned at the site in this post.
If it's true, it makes for a great Halloween band choice.

how could you miss the headstones with cemetery:

I got a gal who lives on the wrong side of town
I know what I like and man you know I sure know how
It's the other side another place
I like it there no accounting for taste
I can't think of nothing when I'm with her
But the rain and the wind and the cemetery dirt

Went down to the cemetery looking for love
Got there and my baby was buried
I had to dig her up

Went down to the cemetery looking for love
Got there and my baby was buried
I had to dig her up

18,000 miles across nowhere land
I'm scratching and I'm spitting there ain't nobody listening
And things are kind of getting out of hand
There's only one point that I'd like to make
These kinds of things deteriorate
It's the gospel truth man
She's embalmed in love juice

Went down to the cemetery looking for love
Got there and my baby was buried
I had to dig her up

Went down to the cemetery looking for love
Got there and my baby was buried
I had to dig her up

To lighten the mood a little, how about David Lindley's cheesy-reggae Casio-keyboard-infused cover of "Werewolves of London"?

David: "I was sitting right across from him, and MY hair was ... well ..."
Backup singers: "Very very greasy."
David: "Kinda like shellack."

"Witch Hunt" by Rush, too. (It's especially appropriate given some people's reaction to current scary world events: "They say there are strangers too dangerous / Our immigrants and infidels")

Damn, everyone's said the ones I would suggest, but I'll say them again anyway:

"Every Day Is Halloween" - Ministry
"Thriller" - Michael Jackson
Entire Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack
"Werewolves of London" - Warren Zevon
"Scared" - some hair metal band from the 80s. I want to say Dangerous Toys but I could be wrong.
