A funny college tradition?

A funny college tradition? sure. But Time magazine's Person of the Year 2001? That's stretching it. [Note: you have to vote for the online poll]
Don't forget the other Tech tradition of stealing the T. We Techies are indeed an odd bunch [tho nothing compares to the MIT hacks]. Pity the administration is so tight-assed about traditions.

Ah...the mystery is revealed. I got an email this morning from a friend, telling me to vote for George on time.com. My friend goes to Georgia Tech.
We used Richard Jonnqes at my dorm. There really was a Richard Jones who'd lived in that dorm and graduated in the 60's; he went on to become ambassador to Greece or something like that. His reincarnation kept getting into all kinds of trouble, though. Whenever someone got caught by Campus Security, he'd give his name as "Richard Jonnqes. Two n's and a silent q."

If I read the Time site correctly, online votes won't determine who wins; it's just a tally of who the readers want to win. For what it's worth, George W. Bush was Person of the Year for 2000 and Rudy Giuliani was A&E's Biography of the Year for 2001, announced last night. Also, Sports Illustrated announced co-winners for Sportsmen of the Year 2001: Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson.

He'll no more be Time's person of the year than Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf was People's Most Beautiful Person. Which is too bad, because I find the "Most Beautiful Person" to be much more inane of a concept than "Person of the Year, and Hank winning would have been quite a sight to see.

Ultimately, the editors of Time make a choice, this is just an opinion poll, so I wouldn't be looking for ol' George P. on the cover.
You'll recall they did the same thing for the "Person of the Century" and didn't use the opinion poll winner.

God, no. It's a shallow, less-than-pseudo-intellectual magazine, and it annoys me that anybody cares who wins Person of the Year.
